Coming soon.....

hopefully will be my new Ultra Varminter in 223rem. Had to get this at Wally world because they were $70 less than local shops. Didn't want to but the price difference was significant to me.
.
Couple of questions and probably been asked before but thanx for any advice.
.....1] what is the ideal scope power or type given the range of the 223rem? I kinda like compact scopes, actually I only have one rifle with a scope [22mag] and the rest of my rifles are levers with aperture sights.
.....2] can the Ultra Varminter in 223rem fire military ammo, or is it recommended to fire only current factory civilian ammo?

I can’t answer the scope question but the military ammo for the .223 is loaded too hot for the NEF/H&R’s and therefore has too much pressure.

When you get the Ultra Varmint, you'll get a notice about bullet selection and not shooting military 5.56 ammo in it. As far as optics, I have a Tasco 5-20x40 Euro-Class on my .223 Ultra Varmint and a 6-24x40 Tasco TS624 on my .204 Ruger Handi.

The scope question:  How good will you be at doping the wind and at doping the distance?    What will be your target?

If you're good at making estimates of both at long range (I don't see myself as being good with the wind :(  ) then you want a higher-power scope to make those long shots.    Otherwise, a 10 or 12 power scope is going to be enough at 200 yds, in my opinion, for ground hog-sized animals.     For coyotes a 10 power is probably good at 250 yds'.    Some people don't need that much power.....but it doesn't hurt either.

If deer hunting I'd go with a 2-7 or 3-9 X 40 and it'd be plenty for a .223 at reasonable ranges.     I don't see a .223 as a deer rifle at 300 yds'.    So 7 to 9 power ought to readily do it at the shorter ranges.

Good shooting to you,

I wouldn't shoot any military ammo just because stuff like the Winchester white box 45gr HP, Ultramax 55 sp and much of the stuff from Black Hills Ammo is so cheap and good that you don't need to bother.
Some of the military and overseas stuff also has lacquer on it and you don't need to add anything that might make cases stick.

I would also say it is a single shot and you won't go though as much ammo as you would with a repeater but I am finding that not to be the case. :)

btw I have a 3-9 scope on my handi but after looking through a 4-12 I wish I had more power.
