Hi, This is a great forum and this is my first post ever on any forum. I love to varmint hunt and expect to soon move to Montana. unfortunately I have to move close to a town with good medical facilities. I'm looking at Kalispell, Missoula, or Bozeman (VA hospital's). Can anyone enlighten me?
Thank You so Much. Von

Welcome von.

Can't answer much as far as the medical facilities in those three towns.    But for 10 years (all of 80's) I did spend a hell of a lot of time in all of them on business - usually at least once or twice a month for a couple days to a week at a time.   So I do know quite a bit about them (all of western MT) if you'll ask some specific questions.

Just for a quickie to get you started...

Bozeman is cattle country, with excellent hunting and fishing opportunities and big enough for good shopping and services - and close proximity to Livingston with plenty more of the same.  Close to my old elk hunting grounds near Nye, and to Yellowstone NP.   Had many great fishing trips on the Gallatin staying at Pinky's and up in Three Forks.   Gets a lot of snow some winters but not as cold as the other two usually based  on my winter trips there anyway.   Always stayed on customers ranches when in this area.

Missoula is a college town, also near excellent hunting and fishing with good shopping and services.   Hamilton is well known and not far away.    Coldest nights I spent in MT those years when the wind blows though.   I ued to go up Rattlesnake Creek to fish, but you could catch nice trout right in the city limits in the Bitteroot and Clark Fork when I was going there.   Stayed at the Red Lion and then Sheraton when it was built.

Kalispell is a great place sitting between Flathead Lake and Glacier Nat'l Park with again lots of great fishing and hunting and the other things.    Personally, I like Bigfork and Whitefish the best, or even Columbia  Falls close to "K".   And fishing the Swan was always fantastic.   Also did a lot of hunting in this area those years.   The Outlaw was my home away from home when there.

They are all a little different, but all real great places with some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

So where would I live if moving to MT - Ennis (but no VA Hospital there pard).

HTH,

Larry

Hello all
I used to live up in Polson it's on the east side of flat head lake. What
I found out is that the east side of the mountain is the best hunting with alot of forest land , now the west side is mostly owned by the indains , or Very large logging companies . It is alittle hard to find a good place to hunt
from missula to kalispel . Medicaly I can't help you never went to the hospital . If you do move up there get ready for the most buitiful, laid back
gods country there is . ( The best predator hunting I found was at Big sandy , Nourth east corner , I've never had as much fun as when I worked on a very big ranch / outfitter up there. good luck . If I had it to do over I'd pick Kalispel over all .

If I had to do it all over, I'd move east of me to the Butte-to-Bozeman area or south of there. Better access to all the great areas, fewer problems.

Missoula's lousy with hardcore freaks, enviros, lesbians and artists all shrieking at once, with their lawyers. Ugh. I live 25 miles away but have to come to work here every day.

The VA hospital is in Helena, which wouldn't be a bad choice either, IMO.

One caveat - bring your own money since there ain't any to be made here!

Cheers

Redial

Thanks Joe, Larry, little Joe and Redial, for a wealth of information. If I didn't have to check in with the doctors so often, I would pick Ennis. What a great little town. Checking the real estate in Kalispell and in Missoula the price's seem to be a little trendy. I did check to see if there was a clinic or hospital in Helena, I found the main VA hospital is in Helena! When I checked the real estate price's I found Helena to have the most house for the money. I think I'm going to set my sites for Helena or a 30 mile radius around it. Any information around this area would be great. Many thanks again Von

I was born and raised in Helena.   I'd live there now if there were more job opportunities.  What do you want to know?
Regards,

Tom

Any of you guys from Montana familiar with White Hall Montana? My Dad spent several years around there back in the 30's. I was there when we went on vacation as a youngster.  I sure would like to know a little about it.

Hello Tom, What I'd really like to found out about the Helena area is can I expect to find bobcat and redfox? Is there descent pheasant and duck hunting around there? Also do they allow night calling? Tape players? I know these questions are kinda dumb, but it's like waiting for Christmas. Thanks again Von

Well, I haven't lived there for awhile, but I have been hunting around the area over the past few years, and my parents lived there until this time last year.   There aren't many bobcats or fox around, that I am aware of.  Plenty of coyotes.  No pheasant hunting, but some duck hunting along the Missouri river.  Better bird hunting is on the eastern side of the state.  I couldn't tell you about night calling, better check with the Montana Dept of Fish and game directly.

There is a great sporting goods store in Helena owned by a good friend of mine called Capitol Sports and Western Wear.....
Regards,

Tom
