Ultra slug in 20ga or 12ga ?
« on: November 10, 2004, 06:33:55 AM »
IM wondering what do you see the difference in them. Yes the 12ga. has more knock down power but im thinking the 20ga still will be good for 100 yards or how far have you shot them. Also what bullets have you tried to use for this gun. Im thinking Lightfields or have you seen something better?  Just trying to get all the info. I can before I buy

If you plan on hunting deer 20ga is plenty. I've always had great results with federal premium 2 3/4" 12ga. The barnes expander buttet drops them in thier tracks. Do a search about these guns or just look back through old posts. There is a ton of talk about these two guns.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

I personally preferr the extra edge of the 12ga, but the 20ga seems to have more proponents and will do the job. The main advantage of the 20ga is lower recoil and a slightly lighter gun. The main advantage of the 12ga is more power, more versatility in that there is more different types of ammo out there, you can get into re-loading the 12 much easier, and at the last minute if you run low on ammo, you're much more likely to find the 12ga than the 20ga.

As far as brands, I really like the Lightfields in my Ultra Slug, and the Lightfield Lites in my Tracker II.

If I can hi-jack the thread, I was about to ask this same question.  I'm wondering just how much difference in recoil is there between the 12 and the 20 gauge?  Is the 12 heavy enough to make recoil in 2/3" sabots managable?  I like the idea of more ammo choices and power, so if the recoil isn't really that much worse, the 12 seems like the obvious choice.  But if the recoil is pretty serious, than the 20 seems like a better deal.  Can anyone speak to this who has shot both?

Unfortunately, I have not shot the 20ga. I can tell you that the 12ga is manageable for me. I thick slip on recoil pad helps out, but even without that, the gun is heavy enough to absorb considerable recoil and is not as bad as some make it out to be.

SLUGS OR SABOTS?

Jake, if you're hunting those MONSTER Michigan DEER, it seems the choice is rather simple - get the bigger bore 12ga.
When Remington first came out with their PremierĀ® Core-LoktĀ® Ultra Bonded Sabot Slug, one of the guys who owns an H&R Ultra with fully rifled barrel tried a box.   He was able to get all of them inside 5" @ 200 yards with a scope mounted on his gun.   That's some mighty fine accuracy IMHO!

The advantage of the 12ga, is you can still shoot full patch 73 caliber MONSTER SLUGS if and when you ever wish to use them...   This comparison pic might give you some idea the difference between 45cal sabots and a full bore 12ga slug...

GOOD LUCK!   :D

12 or 20? get the 20. i don't care how big a deer your shooting at the 20 will kill out to 200 yds. i'm not saying that any slug gun is accurate enough to take a 200 yard shot, more like 150, but with the 20 ga. rem cor-lokt or the win part gold, both 260 have over 1000 ft/lbs at 200 yds(rem cor lokt have 1070 ft/lbs at 200 yds). compare the 20 ga. remington cor-lokt 2 3/4 260 gr slugs to lightfield comammder 3'' 12 ga. 1 1/4 oz at 100 yds
lightfield comander 3'' 1 1/4oz 1800 fps muzzle volocity. ballistics at 100 yds. 12 ga.
energy:1588 ft/lbs
volocity:1600 fps
trajectory: 50 yds:2.0''+, 100yds: 0.0'', 125 yds: 3.3-
remington cor-lokt ultra 260gr 2 3/4'' 1900 fps muzzle volocity. 20 ga.
balistics at 100 yds.
energy:1506 ft/lbs
volocity:1650 fps
trajectory: 50 yds: 1.8''+, 100 yds: 1.0''+, 125 yds:0.8+, 150 yds: 0.0"
now isn't that intresting, the 20 ga. equals or outproforms the 12 ga.
when winchester introduced the 20 ga. partition gold the field tested it on wild hogs. they took several 400 lb hogs out to and past 120 yds. very, very impresive
later :D
I've got to many but never enough!!!!
