Would the .44  270 gr. GDSP  be a viable choice for bear-elk out of a SBH, or SRH?

barber, that .44 might do OK on ELK at a reasonable handgun range.   I think if I was gonna' hunt any kinda' bears on purpose with a handgun, I would rather use a big 45LC with very heavy 45LC loads or a 454 Cassul.   Here's a couple articles that might interest you.

Haven't used them myself but have heard good reports on the bullet. Personally for such game I'd prefer a heavy cast bullet. Some thing around 300-325 grains with a wide meplat. The .44 mag is plenty for such game assuming of course you're referring to black bears. For the big boys (brown and grizzly) I'd want a larger diameter and more bullet weight personally. But plenty of them have been taken with the .44 mag using heavy hard cast bullets.
