TCR Questions

I fourd a TCR '83 that I have to have! Can anyone tell me about this rifle? There is very little info on this rifle on line. How do they shoot? Are they collectable? Some of the prices I have seen on extra barrels are pretty steep! Any info pro or con would be appreciated...

Excellent rifles/shotguns, they have the classic look of the old double rifles so popular in Africa and Asia during the last century. However, no current source of any parts. T/C lost thier parts inventory during a fire and they no longer support these fine firearms. SSK may still make barrels you need to check with J.D. at SSK and find out. I had a nightmare experience with a SSK custom TCR rifle in 7mm STW once. Basically the first frame streched out under NORMAL use. I sent it back to SSK and they got T/C to replace it. The second frame was improperly headspaced to the SSK custom barrel as a result I got case seperations in less than three loadings. Despite a gunsmith adjusting the headspace I was never even able to match regular 7mm Mag velocities out of the TCR. Later I found that TC did not recommend the use of the quick disconnect forearm with magnum calibers (mine had one) so I guess it might have been the problem. The entire rifle was at SSK Industries twice and they never mentioned it might be a problem.
As a result of all this I could not recommend one in any magnum caliber but I know of at least two TCR rifles, one in .270 and one in 30-06 that are MOA accurate and well made firearms with zero problems.
A friend of mine still has a TRC with a scoped .270 barrel and a matching rifled 12 ga.slug barrel with scope and a bird 12 ga. shotgun barrel. He has set up a hard shell Pelican case with cut outs for the barrels and stock. Nice set up.

Hi,

TCR's are sweet! I love mine. At the moment I have 2 barrels, a .223 and a .30-06. Haven't got to do much with them, but I love the gun. Sometimes you can find barrels for sale on ebay, or some of the gun auction sites. The price varies, but around $250 up to what ever you want to pay seems to be the rule.

I have had two TCRs over the years.  Beautiful, well made rifles, both in .30-06.  However, they were the worst for recoil of any rifle I have shot, including the Remington 700 in .375 Magnum.  I think it was the stock design, because they bit me badly in the cheekbone.  The guy who bought the last one from me had the same complaint.  So my suggestion is to arrange to shoot the rifle first.  If you still like it, you won't find a better built piece around.

I have a TCR 83 and will never part with it. These guns are just so much classier than the Encore that replaced them. Too bad TC had that fire or we might still have the TCR and custom barrel options.
I have four barrels: a 32-40 medium weight, a 30-30 medium weight custom shop barrel (before the fire), a 223 lightweight barrel and my most recent, a 22-250 lightweight barrel that I don't need, but I could not pass up for $150. I have a 22 Hornet chamber adapter for this one because I've always wanted a TCR 22 Hornet barrel.

I have a TCR 87 (the magnum-capable receiver, supposedly) with a 24 inch .308 Win barrel. It's got a set trigger. Also an SSK barrel in 6 PPC and a custom shop barrel in 22 K-Hornet. I have never been able to get the K-Hornet to group decently, but the others shoot fine. I really like mine and have not found the .308 recoil that bad. It is a bit heavy to carry in the woods, though. It's got a pistol grip with such a large sweep that it is almost useless - might as well be a straight grip.

It certainly has more class than the Contender or Encore. A pretty, well-made gun.

The limited supply of barrels is certainly going to drive the price up. I have more or less given up on getting any more barrels.
