Boggy I have a Beaver Question
« on: November 11, 2004, 01:42:12 PM »
On Sat. Morning I will be setting up a beaver job.  The problem I am having is the lodge and dam are not on the place that is seeing all the damage ( Trees down and high DUH!!!)  In this case is it impossible to trap all the beaver????

I will be using some 330's with moundmaster #1.  I truely don't know how to set foottraps for beaver yet (I need to learn).  Also I will be setting a few channels up into the timber also.

Dave, many times I never see a lodge or dam. That is the beauty part of using a castor mound. You are dictating to the beaver where you are going to catch them.Setting dens, runs and crossovers, the beaver dictates to you ---where you must set a trap to catch him.I would much rather dictate the circumstances---not the beaver.
yes ,you can catch them all.I learned to trap beaver with footholds, good to know how to use them.I havent set a foothold for beav in 6 years, and dont intend to.
 Good luck, Tom

Dave, set a place with 4 castor mounds today.Hauling in at least 4 more tomorrow to throw in another bunch of castor mound.Got spot for at least 4 more in the next 50 feet of shoreline. After that I will proceed to see what else is available.
I almost always set a minimum of 4 castor mounds.

Tom,

You have saved my life on this job.  4 beaver in two checks out of 5 castor mounds.  I owe you big for this Tom.

One more question if I may.  How many beaver in a colony.  I have three what I call little ones 20-30 lbs and one hog.  1 more or more like 3-4 more???

MoundMaster #1 all the way.  I also throw in a set with #2 also.  3 on #1 and 1 on #2

Thanks for the Help again Tom.

Dave,I expect an average of 10 beaver at an unmolested colony.@ adults ,4 young from last year, 4 young from this year.
I would say those approaching 30 pounds are the young from last year(2 year olds) this years young should run about 12 to 15 pounds.
