Suspenders question
« on: November 16, 2004, 02:26:41 PM »
I know that old-timey suspenders (braces?) had loops for buttons on the trousers.  So, when did the (whatchamacallit) alligator clip (?) fasteners come about, and are they OK for period clothing? :?

Howdy Shorty,

Braces (which use buttons) and suspenders (which use clips) have been around a long time.  I dont' think anyone will really care what you do one way or the other, but dressing is a lot of the fun.

A couple of options for you.  One fella I know used pennies for buttons on his jeans.  Looks and works great.  Another easy option is the bachelor buttons found at Wal-Mart or just about any fabric store.. they just punch through the cloth and instant buttons.

Don't be in a rush to get dressed up.. take some time, look over your choices and decide what your vision and personality want to show.

Thanks for the responses, guys.
Actually I have a pair of each; my button downs happen to be blaze orange, for my wool hunting pants, and the clip ons are American flag motif!  :)
Neither seems very "cowboy" though!
I am, however, capable of cutting off belt loops AND sewing on buttons...darning socks... etc

Howdy again,

If you go to:
www.sassnet.com and go to the classified forum or,
www.frontierspot.org (when it's up..  :? ) and visit the Trader's Tent or,
www.cascity.com and look in the ad area.

These are more specific CAS areas and I'm sure you can find a few folks who have old braces they aren't wearing.  Folks usually let their dust-covered extras go for small pesos..  If you don't see anything for sale, it's all right to post WTB requests.
