M94 question
« on: January 30, 2003, 02:25:33 AM »
This started in the CAS forum, and has evolved into what I'm beginning to think is a dumb question, but here it is anyway; On a pre-64 M94 .30 WCF, is it possible to top off the magazine without first draining it completely?

I have such a rifle that my Dad picked up at a State auction in the '50s.  The rifle is NRA Excellent, and functions perfectly.  However, once you load the magazine (by leaving each cartridge about 1/3 exposed outside the loading gate), and you push the last round in all the way, that round, and all subsequent rounds, will spring back about half the length of the loading gate, making it impossible to top off the magazine without either completely draining it, or using the tip of a knife between the loading gate and frame to push the rounds back into the magazine to push the gate in.

The rifle has done this since I first used it in the early '80s, and I just figured that's how it was supposed to be.  Do I have a FUBAR rifle, or is this indeed how it's supposed to be?

Nope mainspring, that's the way they are supposed to be.  Same with my 1927 94 in 30-30 and my 94AE in 444.  I just sorta force the last round in using the loading gate to push the previous one forward enough to get it down the magazine tube.  Hope this helps.  Mikey.

If you crack the action open slightly, while holding pressure on the loading gate, it will make opening the loading gate slightly easier when the mag is partly filled, you will have to close the action again before pushing in the cartridge. It is easy to add cartridges this way to top off your mag. You'll get used to it.
