What scope power for a .22 Hornet?
« on: November 09, 2004, 04:15:40 AM »
I'm getting ready to buy a .22 Hornet, and am trying to decide on what scope to buy for it. I am looking at either a Bushnell Trophy, Elite 3200 or Nikon's Prostaff since they meet my quality & price range.
My question is whether the Hornet would best be served by a 4x, 2-7x or 3-9x?
I'm also posting this on the smallbore/varmint forum as I don't know which one would give me the best feedback.
Thanks!

What model Hornet are you buying? And, what do you plan on using it for?
The answers to those question will help answering your question. I have a Ruger Number 1 in 22 Hornet.

I have had a 6x on my 22 Hornet for YEARS. Seems just about right.

scope for hornet

Another vote for a straight 6X. I don't have a hornet at this time, but the 3 I've had in the past all wore 6X scopes. My CZ527 in 223 also wears a 6X. If you prefer a variable then a 2x7 makes sense. Regards, Byron

I'm buying one of the new Savage Model 40(single shot, bolt action). I live in Michigan and will be using it to shoot woodchucks, and coyotes while calling mostly.

I have a different take on scope selection for a Hornet. I have a hornet that shoots 1/2" at 100 consistantly. It is by far the most accurate rifle I own and I own many. One of the best things about the hornet is no recoil and being able to see the hit through the scope. I use mine for whistle pigs (ground squirrels about 3-6 inches tall) they are usually only partially exposed when peeking from their dens. I use a 6-18 power scope to get up close and personal on a head smaller than a 50 cent piece. I like the longer shots (75-200 yards). This tyoe of sniping through a high powered scope is very gratifying. Have fun!
