First Handgun Buck ;-)
« on: November 20, 2004, 01:30:25 AM »
Sunday morning about 9:30.  Buck chasing a doe at 35 yards.  Quartering towards me.  Dan Wesson .357, 180 grain Federal Castcore.  Buck dropped like a brick.  I was very surprised and impressed. I was hunting from the ground.  Pretty exciting for this old guy    The old rifles may start gathering dust :D  :D .....Van

Congratulations Van that's a nice deer.  Here in Illinois it's shotgun, muzzleloader, or handgun during the firearms season.  My first pick is a handgun.

Good Job Van on a beautiful deer. I believe I would hang that one on the wall. The coloring of his cape is Beautiful. Sure would look good on the wall.

Be Safe,
Scott

congrats to ya on a fine buck and shot.   I just love them Dan Wesson's.  who says the 357 mag is too small for deer :-D .   I am starting to make the conversion to handguns for all my hunting.  But its hard.   .  So right now I just take both   and if one comes close enough then its my handgun but if farther away then its my rifle.

But I am making the progress to all handgun. But its taking some time to finish. As I do love my rifles.  What to do with them if you go to all handguns

Same thoughts I've had Supermag and I've taken both in the past.  I hunted 5 days last week and never took my rifle out of the case.  Was determined to hunt with a handgun only.  You'll hunt differently.  Stand selection will be different for one thing.  It paid off and has given me an added interest in hunting with a firearm.  Good luck   :-D  ......Van

Know what you mean about leaving the rifle at home from now on. I sure wasn't disappointed. :D

I have to say, My brother got me into handguns and handgun hunting.  I never thought it would be so fun.  Now, even when I coyote hunt in the late seasons, I look at my .223 encore rifle and think of carrying that thing up and down all the hills and through the brush and just say forget it, I'll risk not getting some long shots and just use my encore as a pistol and carry in a holster.  Just try to call them in closer.  It is a lot easier to travel through all of that with both hands free.

Congrats to you and your great buck.  I too would mount that.  That is a real nice deer for upstate NY
A bad day of hunting is better than a good day at the golf course.

Handgunning is the only way to hunt IMHO.

Hi Van,

That is a nice looking buck.  Sure adds some excitement when you get one with a handgun!  You may never go back to a rifle again!
Success is a journey, not a destination...  Might as well enjoy the ride!!

Just remember, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.  You can rely on 911 or on 1911. The choice is yours.

Way to go Van. I’ve been a handgun only hunter since 1989. Don’t think I’ll ever get much into rifles again. My biggest problem with handgun hunting is I keep hurting my face so badly that I have to take painkillers. I don’t really know what to do to stop it. I though that after all this time I would have stopped all the grinning but damn I just can’t seem to.
Love those .41s'

I used to carry both a rifle and handgun with the same logic, use the handgun for the close shots.  But one year hunting in NY, a buck came within 10 yds of me and I was afraid to get the handgun out of the holster for fear of spooking him.   I ended up shooting him with the rifle.  The next season the rifle stayed home.  Now living in Illinois the choice is easy, no rifles (except muzzleloaders) are allowed.
