375 H&H: Best buffalo bullets?
« on: September 27, 2004, 09:22:03 AM »
There are a lot of options for bullets in the 375 and I need to be sure I'm getting a bullet that's suitable for buffalo. I don't mind paying extra if there's a good reason to do so, but I don't see any reason to pay extra if there's no point in doing so.   There's a huge difference in the cost of bullets.

What really works on these critters?

As an aside, I'd be interested in your studied opinion on the difference between unbonded partition bullets like Nosler, and bonded bullets like Swift A Frame for this application.

Situations will likely be in herds, so I don't think I should consider solids.

I could type here for an hour regarding the topic. However I have already covered this in several different posts on this site. Look down the list and the next page back and see the comments on bonded core technology.

Bottom line is that after all the expense, anticipation, practice, trophy fees, daily fees, 20 plus hours of travel, jet lag, custom gun work scope and mounts etc etc. there is only one single little thing made of copper and lead that ties you to the success of the hunt and that trophy. And it just left the barrel of your gun at 2000 plus feet per second. The way that 1 dollar bullet performs is 100% of the  determinig factor in your success. Your happieness and expensive trophy fee dollars all come down to a few hundred grains of soft metal flying along over 2000FPS. How is that 1 dollar an expensive issue? Your expensive field glasses cannot help, nor can the expensive scope, custom made gun, personally fitted boots, range finder, etc etc. only that $1.00 bullet can determine what your going to feel on that 20 hour trip home.  Dissapointment ?.......or pride in your skill and preperation. I promise you after the first 200 yards tracking when blood is getting more scarce you will be saying "what was I thinking when I chose this bullet"  How much would you pay then to pick another projectile?

Do the right thing when hunting far from home for expensive animals, or dangerous animals. Use a Bonded core bullet, or if your gun can shoot X bullets well use them. Don't waste your time with a 20 cent bullet purchased in bulk for the hunt of a lifetime. It's not expensive to buy premium bullets it cheap insurance!

Thanks. I wasn't chiseling about bullet cost. I just needed names of some reliable ones. There are so many options, the important thing is to know which are good options. I'm sure I could buy a premium bullet that wouldn't perform well on big animals.

How do the Speer African Grand Slam bullets measure up?

They don't measure up and are not even close to the same league as the bonded bullets. They are not even close to the Partitions!

I would try the Barnes X Bullets. I use them for 80% of my hunting. I know they preform well and are tough enough for African game. JMHO :D

I am getting really good groups with the new Barnes TSX bullets in both the 270 and 300 gr. versions in both my .375 H&H and .375 Weatherby.  Just wondr how they would perform on “Big Five” type game?  Lawdog

I use the Barnes 270 XLC, with W760 in my stock Win70.  In my gun accuracy is exceptional at around 2600 fps, around .5 inch.  Begins to widen as you approach 2800 fps, over 2800 they go beyond what I consider acceptable.  I load to 2750 and get about 1.5".

I zero right on at 200 giving me acceptable accuracy for plains game out to 300.  Taken 4 buffalo with it ranging from 40 yards to 225.  Performance was excellent on every one.

I suspect the new TSXs will do at least as good.  At least they have for me in other calibers.
