What rifle action for project???
« on: November 02, 2004, 01:21:42 PM »
I am looking for a mauser or other rifle action that will be good for a project. I enjoy tinkering and would like to do some gunsmithing.

Would like to find an action, strip it of the barrel, get an after-market barrel, stock, trigger, etc. Calibers I have in mind are 17Ackley Hornet, or another 17 cal, or 6.5-284, 6.5-06, or ??? Rechambering is no problem. If all goes well, I will get a shilen barrel after the tinkering.

As far as stocks, I would like a near drop-in where I could do some minor work and glass bed it.

Oh yeah...just like everyone else, I want the action at a reasonable price.

Thanks,
Kyle

The 98 Mauser is a good action - you can find actions only or barrelled actions and/or, the complete rifle for under $100.  The Shotgun news just had an add for VZ-24 Check Mausers for under $100.

Another action you might wish to consider, albeit a bit heavier than the Mauser, is the P-14/M17 action - these were in British 303 or 30-06 caliber, respectively.

I don't know what the pressures run to in the Hornet loads you referenced but I believe the 6.5- 06, etc., may run at too high pressures for the SMLE action, unless you get one of the Indian made 308s.

There is also the option of finding an older Remington with a shot out barrel and using that as your platform.  Same for Winchester.  HTH.  Mikey.

Altering any mauser to a hornet would be a real chore.  Getting it to actually feed ammo from a magazine will be worse..  Perhaps starting with a barreled action may be the best way to go..  The CZ rifles are really well built and usually very accurate..  Fitting a barrel to an action is not really tinkering, it's a delicate task that requires some speccialized tools...  The tooling is expensive to buy and not really cheap, to rent!!  Start with a barreled action and learn stocking first.  The metal work will come later..

Gunnut,

I have done the stock work before.  Metalwork is where I am moving.  Caliber is not set in stone.  I will be fine with using a .473 base caliber.  Access to tooling is not a problem and will have a prof gunsmith looking on.

I am also not opposed to having a premade mauser barrel put on.

The vz 98's are good actions and it is still possible to get into a Turkish marked action for very little.  The turk I bought is most likely going to end up a 7x57 or a 358..  decisions decisions!!  The 35 Whelan is always a good caliber choice as is the 257 Roberts..  A 98 is nearly the ideal length for a 257 as the parent case was a 7x57...  Starting with a military action lets one experience a lot more customizing than starting with a modern barreled action.  Most premade barrels for the 98 are short chambered.  This allows barreling without the use of a lathe, in theory anyway..  Most still should have the choulder adjusted so the barrel tightens on the shoulder and the inner ring at the same time.. a lathe makes this a lot easier..  Why not go the whole way and make the sights and scope mounts also..  an interesting project..

Gunnut,

I have found an action for $60....bare action.  Sounds good to me.  Will have to buy sight unseen but I am assured there have been no modification done.

The 257RobAI would be an interesting round for me.  Might consider it or just the 257Rob.

Hope to get thing moving soon so I will have it to work on after hunting season.

When you say "bare action", does it include the bolt?

Sounds like a pretty square deal.  I wouldn't expect anything too pretty.  I have a 257 Rob. on a 98 platform.  Great gun.  I may, someday, convert it over to AI.  I like the "odd".  Right now it is the primary hunting rifle of my 16 yr. old daughter.  She loves it just the way it is, so, someday may never come.
