How much point of Impact change when switching barrels?

hello everyone,
Well I have a contender and an encore.  I have a 375 jdj for the encore and sighted it in about three weeks ago.  I then took it off and sighted in my 6.5 and my 25-06.  I put it back on last week to check it poi before rifle season(Nov 20th).  Well needless to say it has been raining everyday around here and I can't make it to the range.  Hopefully maybe Friday afternoon I can get it checked.  Anyway I was wondering how much the POI could change from changing barrels out and putting them on at a later time?  A friend told sometimes just a little and sometimes quite a bit.  It is just frustrating because you buy the encore for its versality, but if every time you have to switch barrels you have to re sight that is a big pain.  What is your guys history with swapping barrels and how do you prevent it from changing your POI?  If you need to keep the barrel on the frame after sighting it in then why have an encore and just get a bolt pistol or rifle and not worry about it. Just Curious

There are plenty of reasons for poi to change. Most times my impact stays very close to last poi IF I change barrels.Some frames will change more than others. If Ikeepshots around 100 yards I don't worry about poi. If I'm planning on longer shots I take a few practice shots before i go hunting.
   The bottom line is you should NOT have much POI shift, but it IS best to be certain where the gun hits. Besides ,we all can use a little more practice!

Consistency is probably the most important thing about switching barrels. You need to create a routeen to follow when removing and re-installing barrels. Which screw to tighten first, How tight to snug it, Snug them back and fourth, etc. That way you always try and install it the same way each time.  KN

News to me. I switch out barrels all the time. My point of impact "never" changes. The scope is lined up to the barrel not the frame.  :D  When I go to the range, I shoot several barrels and change them out when they get worm. When I pick up a barrel I already shot and install the barrel on the frame, my point of impact is right on.  :grin:

I agree with both replies! :)
 Simply switching barrels, or removing/reinstalling barrels on a frame, you shouldn't have any zero problems. The poi should fall within the mean average for that barrel.
 Where you WILL get impact changes is in the forearm attachment/reattachment process. Unless you have a well-bedded forend, and can get screw tension the same, you will cause changes in impact. I have a 10" bull barrel that will shift about 3" depending on how the screw is tightened on the Pachmayr forend. When using the pillar-bedded wood forend, there is no poi shift.
 Either bed forends for each barrel, use tape, washers, or whatever, but eliminate this variable. Your zero problems should go away.

I need to say first that I only have a Contender, and not an encore which is what you were asking about in the first place. With the contender, the only POI shift that I get is when barrels are moved from one frame to another. As long as the barrel goes on the same frame, I've never had a shift. When I've changed to another frame, there is usually some sort of shift involved, but it isn't much in most cases. But I always take my contender (and all of my other firearms) out before the hunt to confirm everything. I won't take a chance to ruin a hunt.

flatlander, I agree with you 100%. I always check my guns out prior to hunting. I am taking guns in and out of my safe as time to time I may bump one. Only makes sense to check them out. :D

Bug has it right!! The screw tension on the forearm will change the harmonics of the barrel and can change the point of impact!! When I sight a Contender barrel in, I make notes of where the screw slots(10-oclock, etc.) are on both forward and rear screws. This gets jotted on masking tape and gets attached to the forearm for repeating the exact screw pressure. I also use faucet washers between the barrel and forearms on both screws. I use the same two screws with an "F" and "R" engraved on the screw head. To me, this is just one more thing to control so why not do it?
