"New" Toy
« on: March 23, 2005, 03:35:22 PM »
Well I came across an offer I couldn't refuse. I found an old Navy Arms zouave .58 caliber in not so good condition, but for a really good price. Ive wanted one of these for a while, and couldn't resist.

I spent some quality time fixing the cosmetic flaws, and Im ready to go.

I don't have the manual for this rifle, does anyone have any info for load, ect?

What thread is the nipple? I need to get a new one.

I have contacted Navy Arms for a new man, but they haven't gotten back to me yet.

Thanks

Congrats! I love the Zouave.
I was shooting 90 grains of powder with the patched round ball.
With the minie ball use just 70 grains of powder, if you exceed that it will not be accurate.
Go to the Dixie Gun Works site, they have everything you need for your rifle.
Aim small don't miss.

kb,
Is the bore good?
I ask this because I see these CW rifle-muskets for sale, with nice prices, but in poor condition at times.  The explanation is; re-enactors!  Those bums shoot blanks all day on a hot, humid day and don't know or care about cleaning their guns once they get back to camp!  After all, they never intend to shoot for real!     Makes me cringe!

The bore seems nice and tight.....and rust free.  The previous owner let the barrel rust under the bands, then tried to scrub it off with some steel wool, and when that failed, he used some rust remover, and really did a job on the finsh.

It took me a day to fully strip the barrel, buff the scratches out, and re-blue it.  It came out beautiful.

If my local GS that sold it were to see it, they would cringe.  This seems to be a diamond in the ruff.

This weekend I am going to take it out and shoot it.  Wish me luck,
