All this banter to answer one simple question?

Yes. If you can shoot accurately at that distance, the cartridge will do the job. A 4x or better scope would make accuracy much more realistic, but that's a personal choice.

My father shot a deer across an open field with a Marlin in .44 mag., the deer went straight down. He and I walked-off the yardage at 120 yds, we both felt the shot was pushing the limit of the cartridge.

Remington's standard factory 240 grain sp has the following ballistics:

FPS @ the muzzel = 1760        100 yards = 1380    150 yards = 1200
FPE @ the muzzel =  1650       100 yards = 1015    150 yards =  850
Drop @ 150 yards with a 100 yard zero = 5.6 inches.

By any account this is capable of killing any deer. Better ballistics are available from others and to the hand loader.

I tend to use this table as a rule of thumb. Here in MN the deer fall into the 200lb column. 150 yds is pushing it.

i think it looks like the 44 has the ompppphh... , modern reloading/ powders, barrels, bullets etc has the probability, and many can shoot that good with a regular rifle.  the problem is the trapper.. its a tiny gun if im thinking of the right one..  i have a marlin 336a, and it shoots like a house of fire.. i liked the winchester trapper i got it right, but its a tiny gun.. tiny light guns with heavy bullets are hard to shoot in differnt conditions, differnt  coats, differnt angles. etc etc..  your hold, cheek pressure, stock positon butt pitch,  becomes more important ..  howard hill probably  could do it with a bow, but i wouldnt try it with my 336 35 remington.. and it zeros on at 150 yards,. i have doubts about the trappper unless your a very accomplished shot, and have practiceded in the same conditions your shooting the deer..  just putting my coat on after shooting my drilling all sumer  screwed me up.. im not sure what happened.. loads, coat, butt in the shoulder socket possition??  scared me on anything over 100 yards..   i was talking about a similar situation a few weeks back to a very accomplished shooter..  he said it depends on how the gun fits you..  i think hes right..  gun/bullet accuracy and power is not everything.. then comes your ability and the guns fit enters in to it, which can greatly enhance your ability..   im a shotgun shooter so i tend along those lines, i think in hunting situation it holds true to some extent there also.. your doing well at 80 yards, the gun will do great at 80 yards, i think these w onderful creatures God gave us to eat deserve a decent death.. my opinion only.. dave..

The trapper is the same win 94 as any other win 94. the trapper just has a short 16inch barell. I have on in 30-30 with a 2-7 power scope on it. I set this one up for my 15year old and as far as lever guns go its a tack driver and very easy to carry and shoot. I don't even have to think about taking a 150 yard shot with this gun, its a no brainer, it will kill any deer in that range or further. In 44mag I would do the same with the exception of the scope. I would not put a 2-7, i would go with a 1-4 or something like that. I do have a win 94 packer, which has a pistol grip stock and an 18ich bbl. Another great shooter but no scope and that the way that ones gonna stay.

This is good.
It reminds me of the old days when Jack O'Connor and his .270 VS Elmer Keith and anybody else that shot a 30-06, although Elmer really preferred the .338-06.

Elmer would have been on the side of the bigger bore (the ,44  Mag)  in any case.

Ya know what boys, all those facts and figures, energy tables, etc. are fine, but in the real world, results are what counts. Deer are thin skinned, fragile animals, and if you put it where it belongs, it will work. I know from personal experience that my Marlin 1894p with stout 240gr loads and peep sight will do the trick at that range, but I shoot at least 1000 rds. per year in practice, under field conditions. All I'm saying, is, if you know your gun, and have the ability and confidence, that's what matters!
