SSI and the 45 minute deer season
« on: November 16, 2004, 12:36:00 PM »
Loaded up the SUV and headed to the Ozarks for  3 days of deer hunting.  Got to the cabin and unloaded then headed to my hunting spot.  Enroute found a dead bloated buck some one had gut shot and lost.  Before I got to my spot jumped a doe but past didn't want to end my hunt in 15 minutes.  Got to my spot up on a small bluff over looking a wooded creek bottom.  Set up my Coleman chair opened a pop put in the cup holder and got out my first hunk of deer jerky.  Hadn't been sitting long enough for the squirrels to start moving when I spotted a big buck coming  through the brush.  Got my Mossy SSI 308 ready and waited for a clear shot.  I was waiting for him to get to a 3' opening before I shot but he stopped just before he got to it and looked right at me.  I had my SSI shouldered so it was a waiting game to see how long I could freeze holding up a not to light SSI.  Bout the time I was getting a little shaky he stepped into the shooting lane and I put a 150gr.sp in his shoulder.  He staggered, bellowed and dropped.  That was it started hunting at 4:00 PM over at 4:45 PM.  Nice buck but no wall mount he had been in a heck of a fight.  One antler was half broke off the other had 5 points with one broken off and his ear was split to the base.  This was a big buck and got his butt kicked I'd love to get a shot at the buck that whopped him.  Could of got another tag but by the time I got him stuffed in the back of the Tropper no room for my gear let a lone another deer oh well back to the city.

Congratulations on your successful hunt! I am hopping for some sucess this weekend. I went out the last two days and saw 17 doe. Maybe this weekend I will get a shot.

My buck last year had been in a fight like yours. He had a broken brow tine and the tip of his left beam was mushroomed on the end. If he had not screwed it up I would have mounted him. Well, at least he tasted good.

Cheers,

Jay

Matt
Good job with the SSI, I hope to get a deer one day with mine. Hey want to trade your 308 barrel for a new 30/06 barrel. So far I haven't been able to find an 308 barrel. I bought an extra barrel in 12 Ga. Rifled Slug but have struck out on the 308 barrel.

I'm happy with my 308 barrel It's more then enough for whitetail.   KENTDEP you should come to Missouri they are begging hunters to take does in some counties you have to shoot a doe before you can shoot a buck.  Single shot is no handicap to me I hunted blackpowder for years.  Almost seems like cheating using a cartridge.

Mattkc,

Whats the deal lack of hunters or too many deer? Here in Michigan its lack of deer and too many hunters. Well at least thats the way it seems around these parts. Unfortunately there is a ratio of 5 to 1, does vs. bucks. I only shoot bucks. I figure the more does that are shot the less bucks there will be next year.

In many parts of the state more deer then rabbits.  I hunt on 500 acres with 3 herds of deer.  Last year 12 deer taken this year 10 so far.  In Dec. there is a doe season and I'll go back for a young doe for the pot.  The insurance companies have been hurting from all the accidents last year in KC 500 and 5 fatals in the state.   The one thing all the longer deer seasons have hurt is small game hunting.  Most people don't want to smallgame hunt durung deer season.

Interesting. I think that here in Michigan the insurance companies are in bed with our DNR. I think they have sucessfully ruined our deer crop in my area. It really stinks what they have done here.

You are fortunate to even see a buck during your season. You could live up here.

Best of luck for the rest of your season.

Jay
