Saiga rifles
« on: November 24, 2004, 03:17:56 AM »
With the new line of Saiga rifles being sold here now along with the semi auto shotguns I haven't heard anything bad yet about them.  For the new readers here my new saiga in 308 w/16" barrel is nothing short of an AK47 that shoots the 308 round.  I'm impressed with the gun and the affordable price too.  I see they have a line of semi-auto hunting rifles too tha tshould be here in the spring of '05.  They come in a few calibers like 30-06 and 270win and i think there is a 243 too i'm not sure.  Ok these aren't your run of the mill  remington or browning but they don't have the high price tag too but they have the "AK47"  design and reliability/quality too.  I think my new saiga is the best buy out there right now.  Its like when the very first chinese norinco sks was imported here and soome after the word spread like wild fire these were a hoot to shoot remember? And yes I know some think their junk but the fun for plinkin(sks)and hunting small game up to deer size and the saiga line takes it to a whole new level their going into a full line of hunting rifles which opens up a whole new market for us at affordable prices.  For your first hunting rifle you can go for a $100 sks in 7.62x39 or a under $300 saiga in 308??  I don't think it can be any better than this.  I think we all should keep an eye on the new saiga's I know i'm going to see if they get into bigger magnum calibers too!!!!  Having chromelined barrels and gas systems sure gets my vote lets face it the russian quality is number one in the AK47 design rifles.                                                    BigBill

There has to be a reason they are flying off my local dealers rack here?? I found out what the others already know when i first shot mine!!!!  They are awesome, while there not  like your heavy hunting rifle they sure do shoot good.  My new saiga 16"barreled 308 is as small as a paratrooper sks that shoots 308!!!!!!  These 10lb bolt actions just don't cut it anymore(weight) there's a big change comming and its called SAIGA!!!!!!

My point is don't wait like most did with the sks's many years ago to get one lets get on the band wagon now while there still affordable!!!!!

My prayers go out for the fellow hunters in WI. who were killed by an @sshole with an sks.  The sks has been labeled an assualt weapon by many but its not. This sad crime could of been commited with any gun but its not the gun that kills its the person behind it pulling the trigger.  If we look at the many numbers of sks's out there right now the crimes commited with them are very low. I'm hoping this doesn't become a common practice with copy cats.  I also hear that its the gun ban that wasn't renewed and thats why this can happen. This is said by the ignorant and the miss lead and the ones that don't have a clue of what the big picture is all about.  I think we the gun owners of america have a tough road ahead of us now because of one @sshole causing trouble. We must continue to support the NRA and elect the right people in office so we can continue our rights to bear arms and enjoy our shooting sports!!!!Its all about being an American and keeping our freedoms that we enjoy.

Fact;  Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than one of my guns ever will!!!!

Hay BigBill - how's the accuracy on that 308 Saiga from the short barrel??

I think the only problem they had with the first ones in 308 with the longer barrel was the scope mounts - the darn gun shot fine - 2" at 100yds, I think.  How does the recoil feel from that heavier round?  Have you compared that particular rifle to any ot the other Kalasnikov (AK) actions you may have???  How do you think it will hold up to long term use?  Darn thing would sure light up the night, wouldn't it (lol).  Howz ya?  Mikey.

Mikey;  I heard about the scopemount problems and if i put a scope on my saiga which i think it doesn't need one I would use the orginal saiga scopemount while it may cost a few $$ more its made for the saiga by saiga.  I shot my saiga at night too and the muzzle flash is awesome.  I don't own any other "AK" style rifles "yet" but my first one the saiga sure gets my vote.  I read another post on another forum from a guy who has both saiga's in 308 a long 22" barrel and the 16" barrel and he said both are the same in accuracy.  I think the longer barrel would shoot accurate at a longer distance say 300yds? (I think) But my accuracy at 50 to 75yds was good with open sites with me shooting it.  What a little tree stand gun?  This saiga spits out the 308 rounds as fast as i pull the trigger with out a hicup they just fly out till the mag is empty.  It has a chromed lined barrel and gas system so its the same quality as an "AK" which it is in a sporter syn. black stock.  It handles the 308 round very well with litte recoil but with very little barrel rise. While its not my heavy 8mm no recoil Egyptian Hakim, it sure is a light weight semi auto 308. I have to have one in 30-06 and 270 now too when they get here in the spring of '05.  I hope they get into making the magnum calibers too I would love to replace my 338win.mag rip your shoulder off bolt action with a "AK" semi auto!!!  A saiga in 338win. mag. 22" barrel scoped would be it for me!!!!                                                                     BigBill

Good;
It should digest any ammo wether surplus FMJ or SP hunting rounds.
Its lighter than my French MAS 49/56 in 308.
Its shorter than my Cetme
It cycles faster than any other semi auto i have.
It handles the 308 round very well.
Its very accurate.
Its designed for reliability and dependability.
Its very affordable under $300.
With its syn. stock and short length its the perfect hunting rifle.
It should last because of its chromed lined barrel and gas system.

The BAD;

The gun felt rough at first, the action and trigger till i moly'ed it up then it smoothed right out and became an awesome gun!!  But thats just lubing it up so its not a negative thing no refitting or polishing needed.

BUT It does everything very well from price, light weight, short, accurate, chrome lined barrel/gas system, semi-auto, its dependable/reliable(russian quality) and 308 too  What more could we want in a rifle??  I couldn't make one any better or add any thing to this one. I don't think there is a gun on the market today that comes close to a saiga.  I like my C&R's but as far as a brand new sporting rifle this one is it.
