I swear I saw on article on a guy in Colorado (think it was) shooting Contenders or Encores at 1,000 yards or some such. I thought it was in American Rifleman, but maybe it was Handloader. The guy had a special grip that slid exactly the same way on his bench rest each time. Anyone recall seeing this? I ask, because I am pondering the possibility of shooting a T/C against some of the rifle guys in the local 600-yard matches.

He lives in Aurora (suburb of Denver) and his name is Don Bower. I have a MOA Maximum set up to use one of Don's Bower rest Systems. Also have a 222 Rem Mag Imp with 1-7 twist (Hart barrel) on a Contender that plan to use out to 1k with. If you are interested in that kind of set-up e-mail me

I don't remember the article at 1000 yards, but there is one available about 500 and 600 yards in which the guy had a special sandpaper type grip surface. I may have the article without pictures. I will look later on.

I have a buddy that shot his Encore in WSSM 6.5 at 600 and 900. He couldn't get elevation enough in the scope to reach 1000. He was shooting minute of angle as I recall. I will ask him later on.

Wife is in need of attention, gotta go.

You are right on the distances (primarily 500-600 yards), but he would hit out to 800 yards too. Can't remember all the distances in the article.
Have your bud use the Burris Signature rings (Posi-Align) so he can build minutes into his rings. 20 minutes should be enough for 1k, especially with a 6.5WSM. I use 20 minutes with my 6.5-284 XP. Depending on the rig 20 minutes will still allow you to be sighted in for regular hunting too (depends on the specialty handgun). Goal for 2005 is shooting at 1 mile with one of my handguns. Will need a 75 minute mount for that or a 40 minute mount with building the rest in through the rings.

Mmmmm, 1760 yds. What are you thinking of using? I would think the .22-250, .220 Swift, 223 WSSM, and 25WSSM would all be good choices.

My 1k XP-100 chambered in 6.5-284 using 140 A-Max's or Richard Graves 142 ULD bullet (BC in the .700 category).

What part of OK do you live in?

You are correct, the article was was about Don Bower and it was printed in the June 1995 issue of the American Rifleman if you would like to read it here is a link to it.......http://www.1cox.com be forewarned there are some references to Mike B ellm but it is not Mikes site.

One other thing on the rest systems. The one the M.B. is selling is slightly different than the current rest system being made. Don constantly refined/upgraded his system. Marc Sheehan (Don's protege) would be the one to contact now for Don's rest systems. I got to know Don and Marc well because I attended the last two Long Range Handgun Clinics in Allaince, Nebraska. There won't be a LR clinic in 2005, but there will be something offered more suited to hunters.

Thanks for the info, Ernie. I have actually been to Alliance and stayed there overnight with my daughter. I was taking her to Mount Rushmore and forgot it was Harley week in Sturgis; Alliance was the closest I could find a motel room that wasn't booked!
Say, what kind of scope are you using with your 6.5-284 at 1,000?

Scope I am using at 1k is a 36x Leupold which has been converted to a 20x LER. Also will use the 3-12 Burris LER and and a 6-24 Burris Black Diamond rifle scope. Have one Burris 10x IER that I am borrowing for LR too.
The range we shot at for the clinic is an all steel range with targets out to 1k which east of town about 8-10 miles. In 05 we will be just outside of Pueblo, Colorado doing more field shooting (normal hunting or field positions). Again all steel targets with the excecption of 100 yard sight-in/re-sight-in.
