Got my first deer
« on: November 13, 2004, 10:11:35 AM »
I went hunting for the first time this morning.  I bagged a 4 pointer with my Encore in .308.  By no means a trophy deer... but I figure to shoot the first legal thing and get meat in the freezer... I can be picky on the next one.

The shot was about 90 yrds in heavy woods.  I hit about 2 inches behind the shoulder dead center.  I have a Leopold 3-9x40 on warne mounts.  It was my first and only shot, so I'm batting 1000.  My friend told me that 2 in 3 hunters don't get a deer in this area, so I'm doing pretty good.

Very exciting... my Finn blood is shining through.

Thanks everyone.  It actually showed up about 20 minutes after I sat down.  One other person in our group got an 8 pointer.  I passed a second one up about an hour after the first... but I didn't know what I'd do with 2 deer.  I guess technically I can only shoot one a day too.  Beginners luck I hope not... I think it was as much to do with as far as I was willing to walk from the parking.  The bench I set up on was at the top of a mountain.  Had to drag it about half a mile to a logging road (but it was all downhill), and cart it about 2 miles to the main road.

iiibbb,

Big antlers don't necessarily make a trophy. There are many kinds of trophy's. This buck should be one of yours!

Congrats!

My trophy was the shot placement...  I was really worried about just winging one...  I've heard a bunch of first time horror stories where the deer ran half a mile before dying.  Mine fell within 10 or 15 yrds... and I think most of that was falling downhill.

For me evry single wonderful bite of meat is trophy enough!  Congrats.  Im still prayn for my buddy to get his first.  This makes year three for him with no luck yet.  I got my first last year (we started hunting the same time.)  Im happy Im seeing deer, but sure do hope he can bag one so we get SOME meat in the freezer.
