41 mag hunting loads.

I just payed for a S&W 41 mag today, but Im going to have to wait until after the holidays to get it. My question is what would be the best 41 mag factory round for hunting deer? (Speer,PMC,Winchester,Federal,Corbon) They all give about the same energy and velocity. I want it to be a hollow point.

If you change your mind about factory vs. handloads, I have several really good 41 mag load for cast bullets from 210grs to 280grs.

I've used the cheaper PMC 210gr.JHP with good effect on deer. The heavy stuff isn't really needed for whitetails. I've taken a couple hogs with the new Speer 210gr. Gold Dot. Both broadside shots on 250lb +/- animals and both exited the other side. I'd recommend either one for deer-sized game. :money:

It's been decades since I reloaded any .41 mag stuff but, if you get a copy of American Handgunner a couple of issues back, Clint Smith did a good article on Texas whitetail hunting and I think he used nothing but factory ammo. Might give you a starting place for an ammo choice? My son's in the hospital and, I just tonight, gave him my copy of this, or I'd stick it in an envelope and send it to you. Hope this helps.

Winchester has two that will do for close in deer, a 170g silvertip and a 240g xpt. Federal also has two that will work a 210g jhp and their excellent 250g hardcast load using a CPBT bullet. I handload that very same bullet for 95% of my .41 caliber hunting loads.

:D   I HAVE BEEN A 41 FAN A LONG TIME,& I HAVE SHOT A LOT OF DIFFERENT LOADS. BUT WHEN WINCHESTER CAME OUT WITH IT'S 240 GR. PLATINUM TIP HOLLOW POINT. I FELL IN LOVE. THEY ARE GREAT. I STILL WILL RELOAD FOR MY 41. BUT IF I HAD TO SHOOT FACTORY ONLY.GO WITH THE WINCHESTER 240GR.PTHP. AND DONT LOOK BACK. AT ABOUT $17.00 A BOX CANT BEAT IT.GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR NEW TOY

OK thanks for all your help so far. Now while Im at it I should ask one more thing about it. Next year I hope to be able to go bear hunting. What type of bullet would be good on bear?

For black bear, I usually use a 250grWFNGC I cast from a NEI mould. Federal has their lead Cast Core of 250gr, Corbon has a 250gr. load, and BuffaloBore has a heavy lead hunting load that's suitable for black bear. Any of these should serve you well against a black bear at reasonable range and good shooting. Good luck. :D

:D  I AGREE WITH 41 FAN A 250GR. CAST SHOULD BE FINE & CORBON HAS ONE OF THE BEST FOR THE NON RELOADER

What do you guys think about a 210 grain soft point for black bear? How would they compare to the cast bullets you said about?

I still would use something a little heaver. If you want a hollow point, go with the Winchester 240gr. Platinum Tip. You can also use the Federal Cast-Core which has a wide meplant and is designed for deep penatration.
Either one should get the job done quickly, if you do your part.

Black bears, although not generally considered very dangerous, are known man killers and man eaters. I wouldn’t turn tail if all I was loaded with was 210g stuff BUT I sure wouldn’t go looking for something that could eat me if I pissed it off with anything lighter than 240g. For the big stuff that takes lots of killing I use a heavy loaded 250g hard cast that I load myself. The load I use is almost a duplicate of the Federal 250g hunting load. That load has killed some very big critters for me and I have 100% confidence in it and will put it up against anything that walks on four legs or two.

:D  WHEN I HUNT THINGS THAT CAN BITE BACK. I LOAD A CAST ROUND THEN A HOLLOW POINT,THEN CAST & SO ON. IF I'M CARRING MY TC 41 IT HAS A CAST IN IT,& THE S&W IS LOADED AS ABOVE. HAS'NT FAILED ME YET :D

The 210 sp have a good meplat and make a big hole with no expansion normally -- Dick Metcalf shot black bear in the nose /eye area as it was looking at him and it went through over 18" of spine and bear-he wrote it up in shooting times long ago it was a factory Rem load and an 8 3/8 S&W
