Oops, operator error. Glad no one was seriously hurt. The shooter probably has developed a serious flinch. :) Reloading- a serious activity.

Say Fellers, I bet his pucker power went to hell on that one, and his laundry bill hit the roof, Sure did mess up a pretty little marlin. He had to have used pistol powder to get that effect. I stuff my 95 GG almost to the top with 4198 and it don't look like that, Just glad he or she didn't get hurt to bad,  Stay safe..................Joe.....................................................

Does anyone know what kind of ammo the owner was shooting?  It could have been an overload of pistol powder or an underload with slow rifle powder.  I wonder what kind of pressure it would take to do that kind of damage. :eek:

The last few inches of the barrel puzzle me. It almost appears to be threaded. or just a different color than the rest of the barrel. Maybe some set up to cover the ports?

In that photo, the barrel is on its side... see the rear sight dovetail?  The camera was pointed straight down at the top of the barrel.

What you are seeing is the top of the front sight.

Man, he bananna peeled that thing big time!  I vote pistol powder (or just a too-fast rifle powder) on the cause.

Gentlemen,
If it wasn't one of one of the above,, Either pistol powder or a squib load then the next thing that comes to mind is a plugged barrel. The little rifle looks to be pretty new, Boy I bet he said GOSH. I just hope it didn't hurt him or her to bad... You never Know.

The gun, or what's left of it, should be sent back to Marlin for testing just to be sure they don't have aproblem that could hurt someone else.

Are there any other known instances of this type of failure in the Marlin 45-70 lever guns?

GEEZ, this is why I don't reload!!!   I can barely focus my attention for 10 minutes on anything, without my mind wandering.  I would be the perfect candidate for creating a squib round, or a double-charged round!
