Shotgun Shoulder Part II
« on: February 22, 2003, 01:34:26 PM »
Got to go play today; first time since my "incident" about 16 days ago.  The doc said the dislocation of my right shoulder should end my long gun shooting.
Doctors, doctors, we don't need no stinkin' doctors

What the old timers told me was the #26 powder bushing (14.9 gr), using Red Dot would be pretty much a factory load (this under 7/8 of shot).  And it felt about the same.  And it hurt.  And my shoulder came out of the socket.    And that hurt like the devil himself.

Shooting from the hip, for me, is also called, "Missing."  Tried it and was hitting about a 1/3 of the time.  Really needed to do better than that.  Probably could practice and get better but keep reading...

Finally found that the #13A (8.3 gr) bushing would push the shot out of the barrel, but barely.  At least a now can shoulder and shoot the gun.  This comes out to about 56% of the #26 load.  To knock down steel I use the #15 bushing.
Boys and girls, these are WIMP loads if there ever were ones :( but this is what it's going to be for me to say in CAS.  Just buy a pink shirt with ruffles and I'm set
Club is OK with this so I'll see how it goes for the next several months.

That's ENUFF!! Makes me cringe just hear about dislocating yer danged shoulder!  You mention that thing comin outta it's socket agin 'n Ah'm gonne rip it off 'n beat ya wif it!

Now, on to the serious stuff. I saw something in last falls Cabelas Catalogue that might/could be an answer, an expensive one, but a possible answer nonetheless.....gauge reducers.  You could shoot light 20s in yer twelve bore with these things. Looks like they are simply a chamber insert that takes the place of the shell and you load an undersized shell inside them. Seems like you could buy a bunch of these, preload them and load then into yer gun like regular shells!?!?!

Hang on a minute...........................

Ok, I'm back! On page  480 of the Cabelas 2002 Fall Master Catalogue, Little Skeeters Gauge reducers! Available to shoot 20, 28, or .410 in any twelve bore. 39.99 a pair. Like I said, Pricey! But fer about the price of another scatter gun you could be shooting light 20s in a fairly heavy 12 bore gun, getting the advantage of weight vs acceleration. A set of eight of these should get you through 99% of all stages with scattergun targets!

It's just a thought... I HATE hearing about that shoulder!!!! :(

Heyya Cheyenne

Did I miss somethin?  What happend to trying the left-handed thing?  And I agree with Cuts Pard....everytime you mention that shoulder doin its comin outta the socket thing I pour myself another crown royal.....a big one.

Along with the reducer Cuts mentioned, I wonder if one of the hydraulic recoil reducers would work?  Your local club would probably also allow some kinda compensator, or mag-na-port device in your situation.  Not tryin to tell ya what to do, just hopin you will be able to keep enjoying CAS/SASS.

CR,

I've gone over the previous posts on this subject and don't find any mention of possibly increasing the weight of your shotgun some to dampen the recoil.  If you haven't yet tried that, you might consider removing the butt plate and filling the stock bolt hole with some #7 1/2 lead shot.  If you could get a pound or so in the hole, that could increase the inertia enough to give you a noticeable decrease in recoil.  The extra weight might slow you down some, but would be worth it if it lets you keep shooting right handed.  Also, have you tried any factory Winchester AA Feather Lites?  If so, how do they feel compared to your reloads?

Thanks for all the input.  I'll try some as time and $$ become available.

ButlerFord and I sent each a couple of e-mules :)  and I told him my shoulder is fine today.

Think I've found the solution--the major down loading of the shells and I'm set.

This is also good for when my Mrs. starts up with CAS.  Hard to like the sport when your arm is hurting after it is all over.
