First Handgun Buck!
« on: November 26, 2004, 10:44:56 AM »
I was stillhunting the edge of a beaver flowage today when when I managed to get within 20yds of a bedded buck. After an hour of waiting he finally got up and moved to his right giving me a shot at about 15yds. I held on the junction of his neck and shoulder and squeezed off a shot from my Ruger Blackhawk Hunter in 44mag. He dropped at the shot with a broken shoulder and spine. I was using a handload of 21.6gr H110 over a WLPP and topped with a Beartooth 325gr WLN cast bullet. Almost forgot he was small 4pt that dressed 118. Not a monster but I sure am proud of taking him with a pistol. I will probably never carry my rifle again as the 3 hour drag out was sure easier carrying  pistol!

Congratulation, any deer taken with a handgun is a trophy in my book.  :D

Sounds like a first class stalking job as well as a fine shot.  Pat yourself on the back.

Congratulations. I admire your patience.  I would have been tempted to shoot him in his bed if a good shot was available

Congradulations. Getting a deer in Maine is tough. The sucess rate is less than 10% and to get it with a handgun to boot.
