Ruger #3 in .375 Winchester - a few questions
« on: November 29, 2004, 04:50:31 AM »
I am going to post this in this forum and in the single shots - hopefully I'm not breaking a cardinal rule - if so, give me a heads up!

I recently was handed down a Ruger #3 in .375 winchester.  The rifle is in excellent condition, however, the cartridge does not seem very impressive.  Here are my questions:

1)  Does anyone have any experience with this round? I already have a .30-30 ,.30-06, .270 Win, and .35 Whelan - Does this round give me anything that I don't already have?

2)  I really like the Ruger #3 - if the .375 Win is a tosser - could I easily get the #3 modified to something different?  I guess "easily" is defined as not too costly (around $300).

Yukon Gold -

The .375 Win is a nice cartridge.  I n a Marlin action I use AA1680, Rem 9-1/2 primers and Hornady 220g bullets for 2230fps.  Sighted for Maximum Point Blank Range for a 6" diameter target (the bullet is never more than 3" above or below line of sight), MPBR is 214 yards.

Definitely more "thump" than your .30-30 and in a #3 its in a nice delivery vehicle.

You could rechamber to .38-55, but there is no advantage.  A rechamber to .375H&H might also be possible, looking at brass dimensions, but I'd leave it as it is.

I bet it would be a great cast bullet shooter.

:D Thanks for your input.  Between yours and others in the single shot forum, I think I will keep this one and give it a try.  Maybe I underestimated this one!
