Went to the new Gander Mountain !!!
« on: September 25, 2004, 04:41:57 PM »
They opened a new store in Cicero N.Y (north of Syracuse). I spent most of my time in the gun department. They stock around 1600 long guns and about 75 pistols. I've never seen a selection of new rifles and shotguns like it before! I was impressed! Their prices are good on some things and a little high on other things. I think their selection makes up for the difference on some of their higher prices. They carry a lot of gun that most stores would never carry! They had 4 or 5 Browning BLR lever action rifles, your not gonna find that to often. If you get a chance its worth checking out!

New York Hunter,

I went to the store in Johnson City a few weeks back. I too was impressed by the amount of guns in stock. What's nice is that you can see and handle so many. It sure beats going to a small shop and having to hear "I can order it for you."I like to see and feel what I'm buying when it comes to guns. And they have a huge selection of ammo too. I would have liked to have seen more wool in the clothing dept.; but hey it was August-still time. One is opening in New Hartford near Utica soon too.

I hit the new one in Watertown yesterday. I am glad the credit card was at home. I went on a mission for some inserts for arrows. When I go tthere I was impressed with the stock they have in the huntng area and especially reloading supplies. I know where I will go from now on when I need reloading things.

What's scary is the Tonawanda(Buffalo) store is only 2 miles from my house...I try to stay away from that store...It is just too tempting.

Have any of you gents been to the one in middletown? I personally wasn't  too impressed and was wondering how it compared. It could be that my expectations were just too high.

I was in Watertown store Friday.  I`d place it in middle; Better than Dick`s but not as good as Bass Pro Auburn store.  Lots of guns & some good sale prices.

I take this back. Wal Mart has a Remington 1187 premier 20 ga. for $599.99. Gander Mountain wants 699.99 for the same shotgun!    A hundred dollars is a hundred dollars!

It is funny you say that, I am of the opinion that Bass Pro is the middle man here, I kind of like Gander more.

That is just my opinion.

I am just happy to have more options than just Dicks when it comes to buying.

Still looking for the Remington 1187 Premier. Dick's wants $620 for one. Bass Pro wants $699. I told the guy at Bass Pro I could buy one at Wal Mart for $599 and Dick's for $620 and he said he'll match their price. So let me see if I have this right, if I do my homework and shop around they'll give me a good deal, If I don't they'll gouge me!!! I'm not impressed with Bass Pro or Gander Mountain's tactics at all. Like my father says "screw me once shame on you, screw twice shame on me"

OK, here is my story and it might help get your gun cheaper.
I went to G.M. to look at their E callers.  Found the one I want and they priced it at $489.  I went home and in the Cabela's catalog it is $269.  I brought the ad to G.M. on sunday during their grand opening, grabbed the caller and took it to customer service.  I showed them the ad and they could not believe the price difference.  The manager came over and gave his approval.  They matched the Cabela's price, took an additional $50 off, and I used my coupon they sent me in the mail for $10 off good during the grand opening weekend.  So I paid $227 incl. tax for the caller, and did not have to pay shipping.  I thought that was a great deal.  I do not know why they took the additional $50 off and if they will continue to do that, but I am glad they did.  So if you can find an ad with the price of the shotgun, G.M. will match it and maybe take an additional $50 off.  It is worth a try.

Good Luck

Yeah the prices aren't always great but the convenience is worth something. I'm glad they have pistols, it's a real pain getting pistols, Frank in Marcy has better prices and is a great guy, but between buying the gun then coming back after going to the County Clerk that's a lot of driving and gas.

I have been less than impressed with the knowledge of the salesmen, some might know a little about one thing, like shotguns, but none I talk to have a good overall knowledge of guns, nice guys though.

It was nutz there last weekend. I made the mistake of stopping to get some scope rings and ended up giving up after waiting for 20 minutes.

Hey guys don't bitch about it.  I wish they were there when I lived in Baldwinsville.  Right now I have to drive 350 miles one way to Anchorage to buy anything decent.   Gun powder in Valdez is 8-12$ a pound more here than Los Anchorage.

I will be back in NY for the end of bow season and plan on visiting Cabela's and Bass Pro. :D

The Gander Mountain in my area has always price matched.  I don't know for how long but right now they have a promotion going on.  They will price match plus double the difference upto $50.00.  That is why they gave you an additional $50.00 off.

Hey ToeCutter,

Went shopping in the Middletown store yesterday.  I think it is a great store.  Sold one handgun and bought another at a great price.  People in the Gunsmithing area were very knowledgeable and helpful.  Over in the Bow area had them set up a half dozen arrows and again then did a great job.   Was looking for a pair of bib overalls for work and wound up with a pair of Sorel's that look and feel better made then Carharts that were more expensive.  The only reason I would go to Dicks now is for a good sale or some Golf balls.  Have a great day. :D

Thanks for the input BJ, I think I was awestruck by all the stories about the cabelas stores with all the fish tanks and miraculous mounts and all that stuff. I agree that all the staff was helpful and the selection was pretty good but unfortunately they haven't had the things I've needed for the most part. I sure was disappointed with the reloading section. Gotta admit it's better than anything else we have around there(except Bob's for guns). Take care and good luck this season. :D

Hey I found the store when I returned for my whitetail trip.  The store was pretty good.  Bigger than Rochester even!

Still not as good as Cabela's in Dundee or South Dakota though.  Those are stores that do credit cards just no good.

Dicks did redo there Rochester store but I did not make it in.

Yup...Now that Bass Pro is supposed to be coming to Buffalo it seems that I will have another place to melt my credit cards at.  Dicks bought out Galyans recently and transformed the large Galyans store at the Walden Galleria Mall into a Dicks Sporting Goods.  Nice store but I will still take Gander Mtn over Dicks.  Can't buy pistols at Dicks.  Plus Gander is only 3 minutes from my house.

Hey, you Central NY area guys!
I recently stopped into Dick's Fairmount and they've upgraded their hunting department to meet competition from Bass Pro (Auburn) and Gander MT. (Brewerton).  They doubled or tripled their inventory of guns in store.  Admittedly their section of the store can't compete in square footage with Bass or Gander Mt.'s stores but they are within walking distance from my home and that's worth something for me.

Gander Tonawanda store

WNY_Whitetailer

We must be practically nieghbors then because it takes me 5 minutes to get to the Tonawanda Gander Mountain. I really like the Gander store. I don't think I'll drive downtown that much to go to the Bass Pro store. I might go once or twice a year to check out something but unless there is something on sale that is just screaming at me to buy I'll probably shop at Gander or the Maple road Dicks.

WNY_Whitetailer, where do you hunt locally? Do you make the trip to the southern tier or do you go the northern county scene. This last weekend I went up to the Hartland Swamps and man is that thick up there. I tried hunting on Grand Island, but that was even thicker. I felt like I was hunting in the scrub lands of Texas. I normally hunt in the Southern Tier myself but since I filled my doe permit for 9R, which is where my land is I figured I would try to fill one of my other doe permits. I just haven't found a good location in Niagara County yet. I just joined the Tonawanda Sportsmens club so I might have to check their property out next. I have got doe permits for 9W, 9A and 8H left so I been trying to hunt those regions to increase my odds. So far I only seen a few deer in 9W and not anything in 9A. But after opening day its tought hunting alone at new places that are as thick as where I've been in 9A. I'll take the mature hardwoods any day. I have been down to the Bush Hill state reforestation area in 9W a couple of times but have only seen a few running does, but a ton of coyote tracks.

I am really looking forward to muzzleloading season when I can get back out on my land.  I own thirty five acres of mature hardwoods directly bordering 2300 acres of the Bucktooth reforestation area in Napoli. I saw quite a few deer there opening day but have not been back there since I got my doe there. I also saw a few bear scratchs on a couple of trees.  If your ever looking for a place to hunt in 9R private message me.

I hunt in South Wales, Scio and New Hudson.  Mostly in South Wales now but I do make it down to my friends property in Scio at least three or four times during the archery, shotgun or muzzleloader seasons.

Who remembers when Gander Mountain was a catalog store? Prior to Cabelas and Bass Pro. I did a lot of business with them back then.

I was really impressed by GM in Tonawanda. That is the first time I walked in the door. Felt like a kid in a candy store. The wall of gun was mystifying.   Until I saw their prices. At first I looked at GM as my new full service hunting /shooting store. NOT!!!

Everytime I go in there to buy something they are out of stock or "We don't carry that but we can order that for you". Guess what boys if its not a FFL related product I can order it myself and usually get it faster and cheaper.

You can't buy gun powders whether its  Pyrodex, 777 or smokeless.

I was in GM yesterday to get my Muzzleloader license. I went back to the muzzleloading supplies area looking for Hornady SST sabots. The rack was empty just like it was a month and 1/2 ago. Asked when they were expected to come in. "We're still waiting".

I guess if its something I don't need at the moment, I'll order through a catalog.( not Cabelas or Bass Pro either). If I need something quick I'll go to the Gun Center they usually have what you want in stock and their prices are competitive.

I must thank Gander Mtn for turning me on to catalog sales some 30 yrs ago. As a matter of fact I'm waiting for the man to pull up in the "Big Brown Truck"and deliver my order from Midway USA.

I live up in Youngstown, Ny and the last time I was there in the Fall looking to buy a new Browning 20 guage Gold Deergun they told me that they hadn't had one in stock since they opened!!!!! When I asked about ordering they said not to bother so I went to the Cabin Range in Lockport and bought one out of 4 he had on his rack.I also bought a 2 x 7 Leupold to go on it.I stopped up to Gander last week and was talking to one of the young sales guy and told him I had found a 20 guage Browning. He asked me what I paid and when I told him he said that this was $110 cheaper than they would sell them for, IF they could get them! Same thing on many other things, their prices are about the same  as Cabelas and Basspro. My son inlaw bought a new muzzleloader from BassPro in Auburn and when he got home, a few days later found one at the Cabin Range for $65 less!!! I am doing all the rest of my hunting gear buys at my local gunshop ( Cabin Range and Johsons Country Store) as I found out-Bigger is not always better and in Ganders case definitely is not.

You are right Pete...I have found out that not all of the big store's prices are the best out there...I try to support the little guy first anyway especially when it comes to archery equipment.  It's a bit of a drive from Youngstown to Tonawanda ehh...I guess it isn't too bad on the 190 and 290...The Cabin Range is a nice little store.

WNY Whitetailer, your absolutely right I've only had  a couple experiences with the Cabin Range, and they were both very positive. Worth the drive. If I'm in the market for a firearm I'll generally shop the little guy.
