Scope selection ideas?
« on: November 26, 2004, 09:26:07 AM »
Hi Guys,
First time posting here, just found this site.
I recently purchased a G2 frame, and I am ready to journey into the "Contender Zone"
I will be ordering a 10'' 22KHornet barrel this week for my first barrel.
I plan to use this rig for hunting small game(fox), with some informal target practice at the local range. Later I would like to add a barrel for deer, and black bear.My shooting would rarely exceed 150 yds.
I would like to use a scope with quick release rings so I can have the ability to swap.
So, what scope would you recommend for an all around sight?
Is it practical to change out a scope on multiple barrels?
I have no actual experience with hunting with pistols, so any info would be appreciated. Sorry for rambling, I have a lot of questions.
Thanks for letting me stop in.
Jesse

:D Welcome to the board.  You can get a lot of valuable info from this and other forums.   You will love the K Hornet.

I don't think you can beat the 2-7 Burris for what you are wanting to do with it.   In hunting situations out to 150 yds I very seldom get above the 4x mark.    I do use the 7x when shooting off a bench.   The Burris gives a little wider field of view than some others but does not have constant eye relief throughout the range.    The 2-6 Bushnell trophy has a constant eye relief but has a slightly smaller field of view.    Some have had success with the NC Star scopes, very cheap price wise.   My experience was not as good,  and I gave the scope away.
I personally do not like changing scopes from one barrel to another because of having to re-sight in each time.    supposably you can keep track of the number of clicks and reset the scope from barrel to barrel.  I have never found this to be as reliable as it sounds.  You may also have additional costs with this because of the quick release rings generally being more expensive.

Lots of luck with your G2      Ed

Welcome Jesse

I've downsized my Contender pistol barrel collection to three barrels.  A 10" 22 Mag, , a 10" 357 Max, and a 14" 44 Mag.   All wear Nikon 2X scopes.  I use the 22 barrel for target shooting and hunting practice.  The 357 Max is my primary deer barrel.  And the 44 can be used on critters bigger than deer.

My self imposed range limit for hunting is 100 yds so I don't feel handicapped with a 2X scope.  The Nikon can be found used for about  $100-130.  I found the variable scopes useful bench shooting but in the woods I didn't need the extra weight or power.  If I were a handgun varmint shooter I would reconsider.

You really don't want to be swapping scopes from barrel to barrel. You have to resight them each time. Real pain in the @... Each barrel needs it's own scope.

Graybeard beat me to the punch. I would get a scope for both barrels. It is a real pain to swap scopes IMO. :D

If you get a fix power scope to hunt with never go over 2X The field of view on a handgun scope is much smaller than on a rifle scope and it gets real hard to find your target. If you get a variable make sure that the low end is no more than 2 1/2X. Long barrels on Contenders or Encore are very hard to shoot off hand so I put a 27 in. high by-pod on my long barreled hunting handgun. It works great because you can sit on the ground and rest the grip on your knee, about like shooting from a bench. AND I concoor eith the different scope for each barrel. I also only use Leupold scopes, your gun is only as accurate as your sights.
