When trying to make up your mind, try not to get caught up in ballistics and paper numbers. Handguns kill by caliber and bullet weight. Just because one gun shows a huge amount of muzzle energy doesnt mean its a better killer. The amount of energy transferred into the animal upon impact is greatly increased my the area of the bullets nose. As well, bullet weight, sectional density and MePlat all go into consideration. Heavier bullets resist wind drag better and carry momentum through the target. A good formula to use is Taylor Knock out to determine the killing power a particular loading.

Well, IATKYHNTR, I've got 44Mags, 41's and 357's. I had 45 colt in a Contender and a SBH. At that time that's about you could get a Colt in. In my honest opinion go with the big guns. You can always load them down. Love my mags, but I'm on the road to a 454 myself.

Paco Kelly's work that is posted at www.sixgunner.com/backissues/paco/heavy41.htm should tell you what the .41 mag' is really capable of, and how you can get it to work for you.

I'd go with the .41 mag' in a heartbeat in your case since you're looking for a caliber nobody else is using that will still get the job done. National Bullet Company here in Ohio is a source for hard-cast bullets that I'd look into. But, I also agree with Graybeard's use of jacketed bullets for deer, as I've tried to tell the guys over on the NEF / Handi rifle board.....because they drop deer faster. Hornady's 210 gr' XTP in .41 cal' will take deer for you very well. National Bullet's entries will probably penetrate better on hogs, however.

:-D Well, I'm here to make my plug for the .41Magnum. It is just the berries for deer with a 210grJHP. For bigger, more densely muscled game, I use a 250grWFNGC ahead of a good-sized dollop of W296. This has worked for animals like: big hogs, large black bear, elk, kudu, wildebeest, red hartbeeste, baboon, large range cattle, etc. With the .41Magnum, I'm good for all that and more. If I go after really large DG, I'll jump to my .475Linebaugh. :wink:

It's been said that

:grin: Maybe you should be looking at a 10mm handgun as well.....

:shock: I reload 200gr Hornady XTP's to 1280fps........ in a 5" KKM barreled Glock 20 and break 1300fps easily with my 6" Barsto barreled Colt Delta Elite.

:shock: For fun I load Hornady 135gr JHP's to 1625fps in the G20 and 1720fps in the Colt.

Well, after a lot of reading, asking questions, looking up ballistics, and reading about the KO formula, and asking the hand gun spirits to show me the way, Ive decided. Im going with the .41 Rem Mag for now, and will be looking for a .454 Casull next summer. Everything that has been said about both rounds made me see that I needed both;) well ok, I WANT both. :-D But until funding becomes available, Ill have to stick with one gun. The reason I am going with both is I will use the .41 for some of my stand that will have closer shots 10-60yds, and will have the .454 for stands with longer shots, or bigger deer. Now I know all you .454 fans are thinking, just use lite loads in the .454, youre gonna reload anyway. And yeah I thought about that, but I would really like to give the .41 a try, and if it isn't all it's cracked up to be (which I think it will be) I'll just trade it off on a .454. And with going to the .41 for now, it won't be such a harsh jump from my .357. And also the price of the .41s are less then the .454s as is the ammo and components.

Now, which gun to get the .41 in maybe I should start another thread;)

Glad you made the choice to the 41mag.
Welcome to the family! The 41 family is kind of different, it never got the respect the other so called magnums did.
It was the first cartridge I ever reloaded back in 1984. The accuracy is great! I think you will be pleased with the results.
As far as a handgun goes, you could go to S&W, in a 657 Classic Hunter, in the 7-1/2 inch barrel. That is the one I shot my first buck with a handgun. A very accurate revolver. But Ruger and Taurus make good ones also.

A poor excuse is better then no excuse!! And deep down I am a T/C man, I just really want a new revolver right now. :biggun: A kid I work with has a T/C Contender he is thinking about selling, it's a older model, but in great condition. He bought it about 9 years ago, and set it up with a scope here 3 years ago, now he doesn't shoot it cause he doesn't like the scope. Now if it where me, I'd just dump the scope, but he is thinking about selling it, He wants a lever gun for some reason or another. Ohh, and here's the kicker, the caliber.... it's a 44... LOL one of the few rounds I didn't want. Oh well, maybe if I get it someone on here may want it. :toast:
