need help removing Supermag barrel
« on: February 22, 2003, 02:58:37 PM »
I have a .357 Supermag and need a little help getting the barrel off.

I get the barrel out and shroud off, but what's next?

There is no flat spots or anything that would make use of a conventional wrench.

What's the trick to this?

I am afraid of doing damage to the threads try to get it off.

Never, Never, NEVER use a conventional wrench or pliers of any kind. It is guaranted to screw up the barrel. Put some penetrating oil around the base of the barrel where it screws into the frame and let it set for 12-24 hours. Then and only then use a plumbers canvas belt wrench with powered resin to unscrew the barrel. I have removed many a Dan Wesson barrel in this manner. You might check to be sure some fool has not used locktite when assembling it first. One in good order should unscrew with just finger pressure if it hasn't rusted in place or had some jake leg working on it. If this doesn't work post back. Good luck.

:) It just occured to me this afternoon while going thru my supplies of duct tape, this might be a solution. If you take a piece of wooden dowel rod about 3/4" in dia. and about 15" long, put across the barrel back near the frame, be sure you have cleaned off any oil residue, then criss cross wrap that sucker to the piece of dowel rod and see if this wont give you a handle to turn the barrel off. This should not damage the barrel  and can then peel the tape off and clean any adhesive off.

Pinduck,

Thanks for the help, the duct tape and dowel (actually the handle of my plunger) did the trick.

As you also guessed, the previous owner seems to have applied lock-tite of some other kind of adhesive.

I'll be giving the threads a good cleaning before reassembly.
