Changes to the proposed DEC Deer Management Plan.
« on: February 03, 2005, 08:36:43 PM »
I found this piece of news on another hunting thread. It ought to make the upcoming regional DEC meetings interesting. I like the proposals. I hope that they remember the muzzleloading tags when they account for the shotgun season.  I also hope the DEC takes into account the number of doe permits it issues for the regular shot gun season. I don't want to see the population decline to much. I remember back when you had to have 3 or 4 guys on a doe permit. I don't think that will happen though. I do think you will see  restrictions in place in some DMU areas.

Looks like they are continually changing things...Open discussion is good.  Attend those meetings people and let your voices be heard.  I don't know if voicing your opinion will do any real good but you have to atleast try.

They have been changing things for one reason. To bring in the maximum amount of hunter's dollars. The DEC is a political entity and doesn't give a crap about the health of the deer herd. All New York State agencies are under mandate to increase revenues so that  Pataki, Silver, and Bruno can claim they didn't raise taxes. Wake up New Yorkers!

Last Saturday I attended the annual Sportsmen Ed Instructor's seminar in Ballston Spa.  At the seminar, Ed Reed (DEC) gave a presentation detailing the PROPOSED changes to the Southern Zone Deer Season.  He went into details, as to the whys and hows of the proposals.  He confessed that DEC didn't do a good job of determining the size of the deer herd for last season.  To their defense, the wet spring coupled with a warm fall did nothing to improve hunter chances for success.
Based upon the results of this past season, there is going to be a SUBSTANTIAL reduction of DMPs in certain areas.
The big problem is that less and less private land is open to hunting across the state. DEC can try to do there best to keep the deer herd in check, but unless more private land is open to hunting, they will never achieve their goal.  IMHO.
