Who is writing good shooting and hunting books today? Can you recommend any good titles and summarize them?

Well depends on if your up to some math:

Understanding Firearm Ballistics: Basic to Advanced Ballistics Simplified, Illustrated and Explained By Robert Rinker.

There is a lot of physics and math descriptions, but he tries to simplify and gives good examples what goes into making bullets fly from a gun and why things happen the way they do.

Then of course if handguns are your thing I can tell ya you cant go wrong with anything written by his excellency Elmer Keith. Im also kinda partial to John Taffins writings.

I'm glad somebody likes Taffin. I think he's an awful writer, and very boring. His "Big Bore Sixguns" is the only book I've ever bought and then sent back for a refund. It was positively insulting in quality and I supposed that it was a collection of rejected magazine articles.

Craig Boddington does a very good job with his opinion pieces in the magazines and I like his book Shots At Big Game very much. I would like to find some other books written by him to see if they are good too.

Ken Howell has a couple of good ones out.

I really enjoy Carmichel's Book of the Rifle.

Look for titles by Rick Jaimison. He is in my opinion the best of the technical guys these days. His stuff is really good in the magazines. Dunno about what books he has out but I know he has written several.

Craig Boddington; in my book he is the bar-none best gun writer, period.
If Bob Milek were still alive I'd probably give him the nod instead.

In keeping with the thread and knowing it is now common to find classic books on ebay and such. Who would you recomend who is no longer in print. One of my Ebay buys is the complete book of shooting, by O'Connor, Dunlap, Kerr and Jeff Cooper. Great Outdoor life book. JB

I don't know if John Barsness has written any books, but his magazine articles are among the best.

i've read John Barsness' books "The Life Of The Hunt " and "Western Skies". "The Life Of The Hunt " is a collection of short hunting stories with a fishing tale or two thrown in. "Western Skies" is a group of upland/waterfowl stories taking place in the western US. Both were good books that I bought on amazon.com at used prices.

If you'd like to read great stories about hunting in Africa you might want to consider Peter Hathaway Capstick. Poor old Pete is dead now but his books will be read by generations to come. He has a great sense of humor and I thoroughly enjoyed every book I read from his pen.

By the way, the hunting videos he did on hunting in Africa were good too. They're the best hunting videos I've seen (which isn't saying much, I know). I have the Botswana Hunt and Cape Buffalo videos and I can recommend them. He was a good writer, but not very telegenic. However, it's a good show anyway.

I just love the guy's sense of humor. He was the one who introduced me to the concept of "bonded Kentucky drain opener" (ie, cheap whisky)!
