Got one In N.Y
« on: December 06, 2004, 02:35:51 PM »
I got a nice 6pt in N.Y. State last weekend. Got him with the ole 6.5jdj, 38gr of rel 19 and 120gr nosler bal tips. I guess it's a love hate thing with the bal tips. I don't like them in my 309jdj, but really like the 150 gr Hornady's flat base spire pts, with 52gr imr 4350. The six pt was about 70yds walking in big oaks, got him in the window and touched it off. Right in the boiler room, he went about 50yds and it was all over. Excellent blood trail. I have never recovered a bullet from 6.5jdj, but have recovered several from 309. Anyone ever have an luck with the speer120gr?  I went to pa last weekend and missed a decent buck with a borrowed S&W 500 mag. I guess these old eyes can't shoot open sights as good. I shot the gun at 50yds off a good bag and it shot pretty good. These were factory ammo, honady 350 gr. I shot 2 cyclinders out of the gun, and that's all I wanted for the day. If I had one, I would put a 2x burris or leupold on it for sure, with a tsob, 3ring mount. Enough of me. am going to pa again this weekend, am takilng the 309.  slik 1

Congratulations on your deer.  What part of NY are you hunting?  I used to hunt  near Saugerties.

Chris

Hope you bust one next week.  Be safe and good luck.

I've used Speer,Sierra and Hornady in my 6.5jdj.There isn't much difference in them. They all seem to like venison! Some times you have to fiddle with the powder to get the smallist groups though.
