Which gun for me?
« on: January 03, 2005, 01:06:21 PM »
I am wondering which is more accurate, the single shot 22's or .17 hmr's. also, what is the 17 mach2? is its ammo cheaper than the ammo of a 17 HMR or more money? what is a box of shells going for for a .17 hmr? I'm looking for a new plinking/ trapline / POSSIBLE yote gun (if i decide i like the 17). I heard the 17 can be used on yotes for headshots, is this true?

any info would be great

\thanks

BPM, I personally think the .17 HMR woulkd be devastating on coyotes with head shots and with the new 20 grain ammo even more so. A heart shot should also put them down for the count if no bone was hit. I think the .17 Mach2 might be a little underpowered for coyotes. .17 HMR ammo is between $9-$10 a box and .17 Mach2 is about $5-$6 a box at this time in my area. The .17's are EXTREMELY acccurate and a .17 HMR rifle or revolver would be a wonderful trapline gun, but then again up close and personal a .17 Mach2 might work fine also. You could always just go with a regular .22LR with Stingers in it or a .22 Mag....<><....

Every .17hmr I own shoots as good if not better at 100yds than any 22Lr rifle that I have ever owned did at 50yds. There may be exceptions to that statement, but in general, a .17hmr is much more accurate. Cost is another matter, ammo is $8-10 a box of 50 and certainly isn't practical for plinking like a .22Lr is, but if you like shooting sub moa groups, the 17hmr or the 17mach 2 is the rifle to have. The 17Mach2 is a necked down .22 stinger round shooting at ~2200 fps, a 100yd zero will be .7" high at 75 yds, compared to a 22Lr that will be 2.5" high mid range. 17M2 ammo is $5-6 a box of 50, so it's a bit less expensive than the 17hmr, but still not as cheap to shoot as the .22Lr.

Lot's of yotes have been killed with the .17hmr, but it's not a yote caliber. If I were out with the 17hmr and had the 20gr XTP rounds with me or a standing shot of 100yds or less, the 17hmr will fulfill the task with a well placed round in the boiler room, but a shoulder hit will be less than desirable, especially with the Vmax or to a lesser degree, the TNT/Speer hollow point, they tend to fragment instead of penetrate. The 20gr XTP or Gamepoint bullets are controlled expansion bullets and will make a big difference in penetration and terminal performance or larger critters like g'hog, yotes, foxes and such. Up close, 25-50yds, the Vmax bullets will fragment on a yote rib and not penetrate at all, so I wouldn't want to rely on it for a quick kill, at 100yds, they seem to do better as speed has slowed and the 17gr pill is not so explosive, but I'd still rather use the 20gr bullets for larger critters. Head shots are a bit tricky as the head tends to move more than the rest of the critter, but the .17hmr is very capable of that kind of accuracy if the shot presents itself, but I still rather take a broadside standing boiler room shot over the head shot, a slight miss on a head shot will result in a wounded yote destined for a long and slow death.

thanks guys. That 17 hmr is lookin' good right now. i allready have a 22 but its my dads and gets beat on the trapline so i figured go for something in single shot and simple, which can take abuse and i wont get too worried whenever i drop it in the mud, or go thru the ice, or trip in the water... Then i thought a 17 HMR might be nice to take out yotes and put only a small hole in the pelt.. because i just dont wanna shoot that 22 at a yote unless its in a trap and within 30 feet or so. Do you guys have any idea on what the 17's cost? My birthday is soon and I'm thinkin' that's what i wanna get...

The Sportster .17hmr normally retails for about $130, they were on sale at the local Mart last week for $110, Walmart has em for $104 if you can find em. NEF made it in stainless when the 17hmr was first released in 2002 or 2003, would be nice to find one of them for the trapline.
