30-40 Krag
« on: November 12, 2004, 09:31:18 AM »
I just put a really neat Krag Sporter on layaway. It has had the barrel turned and Redfield peep sights installed. I couldn't see the inside of the barrel all that well, but it looked pretty fair and I'm hoping it will shoot good. I've heard of gunsmiths rechambering 03A3 barrels and installing them on Krags. Anyone ever heard of this?

One would have to face off a lot off barrel to remove enough chamber that the 30-40 reamer would clean it all up.  might work but I'd have to measure a bunch before that cut.  Plus with the price a good springfield barrel is these days a cheaper grade barrel would probably be a better way to go.  Someone like McGowen perhaps.  Shoot the barrel that's on it before swapping though as these old rifle shot really well if in even decent condition/.

Swampy, listen to the man. My old Krag's bbl looks pretty worn but it shoots like a ball'o'fire! The Redfield peep helps a bunch. I just wish I could get a thicker blade on the front so's these old eyes could see it better.

Hook-
Try adding a bead and color the face with bright paint, perhaps even to dayglow stuff.  It really improves the visibility over the blade.  If your desitant about defacing the old krag a bit of Acraglass on the blade will remove easily if needed but should stay put OK for target shooting...
