1000 yard match in Pella Iowa
« on: September 06, 2004, 06:37:01 AM »
There will be a 1,000 yard match in Pella, IA on September 11th.  There will be a group of specialty handguns there.  If bench shooting with a SP @ 1000 yards interests you let me know.

Bill,
The best group of the day in the handgun class was 9.71 inches (5-shot groups).  It was with a Broughton barreled 6.5-284 XP-100 with Al Forbes behind the wheel.  He won for group and yours truly won for score, with my best group being 11.66 inches, using a Krieger barreled XP-100 also in 6.5-284.  We shot twice in the day for the handgun class.  The groups mentioned were from the morning, but the winers were determined by the combined averages of both relays.
It was a great time and the handgun class will continue in 2005.  A number of guys are getting handguns ready the new "handgun class" in Pella.  I expect to see XP's, Encores, Contenders, Strikers, and MOA's shooting at 1k in 2005.

Ernie, that's inspiring! Do you think a TC would be competitive with an XP?

The rigidity of a single-shot action is hard to beat in side to side comparison against an Encore.  My guess would be if you are shooting @ 1k and your shooting form and ability to read conditions is better than a guy shooting an XP you will come out on top with your TC (shooting the same bullet with the same BC at the same velocity) more often than not (especially in changing conditions).  I have not shot a TC @ 1k consistently, so I am not qualified to answer your question from experience.  By the fall of 05 I hope to what a Contender can do though.

Thanks Ernie. What's the twist rate of your barrel? Do you mind sharing bullet/powder data on your 6.5/284 load?

Bill,
1-8 twist, Heavy tapered 17 inch barrel, Lapua brass (tight neck chamber), Fed match primers, 140 AMax, H-4350.
Will likely try H-4831SC this spring.
