How many of you guys on here are into groundhog hunting? I know its not the season, but I can tell you I sure am ready for it! I have a 10 acre field where I can get shots up to about 300 yards on em. I also hunt around local farms and the one field I go to will let you shoot close to 1000 yards at the whistlepigs. Never got one that far but it sure would be nice!

I use a 17HMR, 223, and 25-06. I am kind of in the process of thinking about getting a 204 Ruger but I can almost do that with a 40g load in the 223 and my 06 will smack them furthar than I can see em.

Just figured I'd bring it up to kill time and perhaps hear a few of your stories about hog huntin.

My favorite has to be the time where I shot one that was on top of my shooting bench. I was inside the house when I happened to look out the window and see a hog sniffin at my bench and gettin up on its hind legs. Quickly, I grabbed the HMR and ran upstairs to get a nice shot out of my window. At this point, it climbed onto the bench and provided me a nice headshot. One shot with a Federal 17g Vmax put an end to that hog. The bullet took a nice chunk of scull out at the measured 60 yards

Thats nothin like the 25 though. Those 75g Vmaxs make the hogs do summersaults and throw internals all over the surrounding area with a nice hit. Pretty nasty, but fun to watch if the gun doesn't hammer ya too hard...the HMR lets you see the hits

Good Shootin'

You might try the Serria 87 grn. varmint bullets in your .25-06. They start alittle slower, but have alittle more point blank range than the 75 grn. bullets. They are my bullet of choice in my .257AI.

Yea, I tried the Sierra 90g HPBT's in my 06 but found the 75 grainers suit me a little better for around here. Another reason I like the 75g bullets is because they have less recoil than the higher grain bullets do.

One bullet I am now thinking about is the 72g Berger MEF. I like the little ones as you can see  The price tag is terrible though and add that to the 56.5 grains of powder I use for my g-hog loads. A little too expensive for blasting varmints
