Yugo SKS for $150?
« on: December 02, 2004, 05:11:47 PM »
Just talked to one of the dealers at Big 5 today about their milsurp sales.  I was looking at a Yugo SKS they had for $199, and he told me to come back Sunday because they will be on sale for $150.

Does this price sound about right? I've looked through a years worth of posts and saw everything from $75 to $250.  I don't own as SKS yet, but am looking forward to getting my first.  He said they only have 6, and they are in "excellent condition".

What are some of the big things I should look for??  They are all in a box and layered in cosmoline (I assume).  The more serial numbers that match the better is my understanding.  For a SHOOTER, the critical parts are the receiver and bolt right??

Thanks in advance for your help!

M59 or M59/66? the 66's are nice and chunky, but both are good, especially at that price!

They are all the 50/66 (A1).

I've never tried to restore anything soaked in cosmosline, but there seems to be quite a bit of info in this forum.  Hopefully it won't be too great a task to strip the stock down to a clean finish.

Is the natural wood the prefered finish, or is it OK to add a clear coat to it?

With the 59/66 yugo's thats not a bad price if its in "LIKE NEW CONDITION" or in "UNISSUED CONDITION"  but if the wood and bluing is in "EXCELLENT CONDITION"  i'd buy it too.  Does it have a log book?? Some of these had log books just make sure the numbers are correct to the gun, "they match".    I have one that doesn't and that put the brakes on me ordering anymore of them.  There were a lot of us who were pissed off about it too and it put the brakes on buying from AIM SURPLUS. When a dealer screws up on the net the whole world knows about it and its like an open wound everytime the subject comes up too.  These were never checked when they arrived and were just shipped to us.  So i would besure to check it out in person first to besure.  My point is get what you paid for up front because you can see it in person!!!!  The only draw back on the yugos is no chromed lined barrel so make sure you clean it right after shooting it because some of the 7,62x39 ammo is corrosive.  I don't trust what any imported ammo box says wether it says corrosive or non corrosive i clean everything the sameway right after shooting it anyway to besade!!!!!  I washed my yugo recievers in Kerosene after taking the gun apart and i wet down the wood with rubbing alcohol a few times to get some of the cosmoline out of the wood.  After that you may want to try the black garbage bag in the hot sun treatment to get all the cosmoline out of the wood to besure its clean before sealing it if not the cosmoline will come out under the finish in the hot sun then you have a real mess on your hands too.  I left all my yugo stocks orginal right now just for that reason.  :D                                                BigBill
