I was wondering how well bipods have worked for those of you who have tried them on your Handi/Ultra rifles? I've heard some people say they don't work on them and others seem to have them on all of theirs.

I'm thinking of getting one for my synthetic Handi but to say the forend has some flex in it is an understatement. I have put a foam o-ring on the stud and did a little sanding and scraping so the forend doesn't touch too much. The gun shoots pretty well even while resting on forend, although I don't put a lot of weight on it.

Do you think they work better with the stiffer wood forend?

I shot the next to best group I've shot out of my .223 Ultra Varmint with a harris bipod on it from the bench, .440" 3 shots at 100yds, best group was .265" and those were done with the win white box, FWIW! Me thinks that if there is a problem with the forend mounting, the position of the forward rest or use of a bipod may make it shoot worse.

For hunting I shoot off a set of cross-sticks that are covered with camo' tape to prevent animals being spooked. They're thin fiberglass poles that you can buy in a lumber yard with a reflective finish on them so they can mark the location of your driveway or walkway during the winter.

The difference: when the rifle rises in recoil it is not carrying the weight of the bipod with it, and it packs differently than a forearm-mounted bipod. It shoots the same as a rifle shoots off a proper rest at a bench. It works very well for me. The two sticks together cost about $4.50 and they're light to carry.

I have a stoney point polecat that is real handy, weights 16oz and I made a leather strap for it to sling over my shoulder, collapses to 25", extends to 62" or anything in between, so it works sitting or standing, it's extremely steady, have made 200+ yard shots over it with my .17hmr.

I do have some homemade shooting sticks but because of a physical reason even with them I am not able to always shoot past 200 yards. The lower and flatter I can get the better chance I have of shooting farther. That's why I want to try a bipod, just to see what I can get out of my gun. But if not many people are having luck with them on Handis I'll just live with it.
Believe me if I could get by with just shooting sticks I wouldn't add any extra weight to my gun, and besides I'm cheap. :grin:

Tim, a low bipod works great from a bench but in the field, even grass can keep ya from making a shot, so keep that in mind when selecting a height. btw, great name! :wink:
