Scope opinions??
« on: December 08, 2004, 11:49:15 AM »
I have a 14" 7-30 barrel.  On it I mounted a Bushnell 2x6 28mm ( I think) scope.  I took it deer hunting and found it to be very slow on target and have a very small field of vision.  Is this normal?  I'm giving serious thought to taking it off and reinstalling the rear sight.  Does anybody have a better recommendation for a LER scope?  Less magification wouldn't be the worst thing either.....1.?- 4 or 5?????  Any advise wold be appreciated.
Thanks.

I sold both my Burris 2-7X scopes.  My three TC handgun barrels are all set up with Nikon 2X scopes.  They are all I need for the close range hunting that  I do.  I can get on target quickly with these scopes.

the leupold and burris 2x has 21' wide view @100. ......as for a variable, the burris 2x7 has 21' wide fov @100 when adjusted to 2x.

compare those specs to the bushnell, to see if it helps ya enough. i'm not sure of the exact bushnell specs, but i'm sure it's considerably less fov.

I have a 2.5x7 Burris on an XP and it does not seem to have the problem yours does.Although my 7x30 ,14" T/C barrel is wearing a Simmons 2.5x7 and eye position is very critical with it . At the range the other day I had to reposition the sand bags to get the scope far enough away to get a full view. I am 6'5 with long arms,so your problem might be that you're too close.I like variable scopes. I have 2 ,3 and 4 x's on different barrels/guns, but 2 to 8 powers can be dialed up when you NEED that little extra edge. Most deer hunting CAN be done using a fixed 2(good eyes) or 4power(normal eyes). I think that Leupold is the best scope on the market
Burris is almost as good, but cheaper.

I have 2X Leupolds on most of my scoped handguns. I do have a 4X Leupold on a .357max. Encore and killed a deer with it this year, but I`m convinced that is to much magnifaction for a handgun hunting scope. The only scope that I use that is not Leupold is a 1 1/2 to 4X burrius on a .454 Red Hawk and that one seem to work ok on 1 1/2X. I don`t think that you can beat a good 2X Leupold on a handgun.

I like the straight 2x Bushnell that sits atop of my .375 Win.  Wide field of view, low magnification, and pretty bright in low light conditions.  Just picked off a doe last Saturday running across some fields at about 60 yards to fill the final tag...I know I couldn't have hit her with any higher magnification at that distance running, in fact open sights would have been just as good for me.
How'd you like a peek at my 14-incher? (Contender, that is)

Just a view from another perspective.
Where some handgunners make a mistake, is how they "mount" their scope. No, I'm not talking about how it is attached, but how it is brought to bear on the target.
If you point the weapon in the general direction of the target, look through the scope, then try to find the target, it can be difficult. Also, sometime during this process, most will close one eye, making it all the more difficult.
It is much easier to look at the target with both eyes open, them move the scope into alignment between your dominant eye and the target. I find this is much faster, and alignment is almost automatic. At this point, you can close one eye, if you must. I don't. Of course, this presupposes that eve relief is correct.
You might try this, to see if it helps your situation. It would have never ocurred to me to explain this, but a friend had this same problem. After I explained it to him, he hasn't had any problems at all.

If magnification is not a problem, try an Ultradot.  If you have a friend that has one on a pistol , give it a try.  It really helped my shooting, and with bifocals the problem of eye relief was eliminated.

I'll second the Ultradot recomendation, the best thing I ever did for hunting deer was take off my 2-6 and replace it with the Ultradot.  The scope was great for getting a load worked up but after that I had trouble picking up and staying on target with a walking deer, even using the scope and both eyes open method.  With the dot sight I can hit 6" swingers at 50, 75, and 100 yards all day long freehanded, plenty good to kill a deer.

Thanks for the imput.  Several good points came to light.  It does seem that the eye relief is a bit short.  The other thing that i never even thought about is the bifocal factor.  I do wear bifocals and have not mastered them yet!   I do feel llike the scope isn't far enough away.  I tried pushing it further away on a sandbag and it seemed to help a bit, not completely.  Looks like that one will be coming off.  I will have to check out the Ultra dot and a straight 2x.  Thanks again.  You have been very helpful.

Keith,
I'm not sure what the Ultradot is but I'm suggesting to you that if you want fast target acquisition, you need to use both eyes.........open and following a 30mm 1x Red Dot.  I think the military has chosen red-dots for a very good reason and pistol scopes don't make that possible.  Just my two cents worth!

I picked upa Milllet Red Dot Sight (30 mm) last night & installed it.  I went to the range with it today.  What a difference!!!!!!  And to think it was like just over 1/2 what i paid for the variable!!!!!!!!
