Anybody use on for this purpose? I'm thinking about getting one (or building one) and was curious as to what bullets some of you use. Can you get one with a 1:12 twist, or is 1:9 as slow as most makers go? Will a 1:9 twist stabilize bullets in the 40-50 gr weight range? What brand would you recommend? Armalite? Bushmaster? I really want a flattop with a 24" bull barrel and a nice light trigger as well. I plan on doing more research on this, but I thought I'd ask some of the experts here first. Thanks for any help you might be able to give!

I use a Colt 24" stainless bull barrel for shooting prairie dogs all the time. My gun has a 1 in 9" twist, and will shoot 55 grain bullets pretty tight. I have shot the 45 grain Winchester "White Box" rounds out of it too, and they shot good enough.

One guy I know uses a Colt. Nice gun if you like that style. Personally, the geometry of the stock and sights is completely wrong for me when the gun is scoped. He likes it, and that's what counts. It seemed kind of expensive for its purpose. He does not reload, and leaves his brass on the ground. I believe brass catchers are available for this type of gun, however.

If you're going to scope an AR, you've just about got to get a flat top version. If not, the scope will be very high, and you'll most certainly need a check peice for the buttstock.

Wlscott, that answers my question about the twist rate, thanks! I'm thinking about a Bushmaster Varminter (a heavy barrelled model with a flattop). Hoping to find a local dealer that stocks Bushmasters so I can see how it feels. I have shot one that had the scope attached to carry handle. It was a little awkward. Anyway, thanks again!

I have a friend that is a dedicated prairie dogger. He shoots a Bushy Varminter. He likes it a lot.

I love my Colt though.....

I have a Bushmaster Varminter with a B&L Elite 4200 in 6 X 24. I used Burris High Zee rings on top of the blocks that came with the Bushy in order to get high enough to clear everything. I put about 2000 rounds thru it this year and have had no problems with it. Very accurate and if I had to name any minuses, it would have to be the weight. It is a bit heavy. If I am planning to walk very far, I take a lighter weapon. But since I usually ride from one Prarie Dog town to the next on my 4 wheeler, it usually goes along for the ride.

id say look at the new oly arms plinker plus. very affordable and i've never had a problem with mine
