shooting 410 slugs

i picked up some 410 winchester slugs yesterday, i planned on shooting them out of a Winchester Model 20 single barrell i bought last year on a trip to New England...the gun is in GREAT CONDITION......will the slugs harm the barrell......i can't tell what choke it is........i thought about trying to shoot a small wild pig with the slug.......but i do not want to harm my gun----------thanks for all replies

Those slugs are just like a lead thimble. They can squeeze through any choke. You might get a little lead buildup in the bore but some Hoppes and a brush can remove that.

I have shot a few .410 slugs out of an old Wards Herculese single shot. It has a full choke. With a bead front site and just a shallow groove of a rear I could hit within 3 inches at 50 yards.

Energy wise I have heard people say both good and bad. Some folks claim it has the energy of a .380 auto. Others claim it has the energy of a .41 magnum. Some commonly abused comparisons that both are easily disproved.

 The actual figures are an 87 some odd grain slug going about 1830 FPS for an energy of 661 foot pounds at the muzzle. That gives it more energy at the muzzle than every .357 magnum load Winchester has listed. The bullet is a lot lighter though, so penetration might not be so deep.

Go for it.  My family has an old Mossberg bolt action shot gun in .410 floating around from person to person.  It has a full choke (as measured by a 'smith) and a bead front sight.  It mostly gets slugs, which it seems to love.  My Grandpa got his final deer with one shot using it, before he started migrating south for the winter.
