Cast bullets
« on: December 06, 2004, 08:15:14 AM »
I've found some hard cast bullets from Hunters Supply, they're 300 gr. .430 dia.  They are $27 dollors for 500 and are flat nosed type. Any one ever used these, and are they priced right? I'm gonna use them in my 44mag barrel, and it shoots the 300gr. XTP's very well. Also how fast can they be pushed without a gas check?  Digger

Price is right on, try 22 grains of 1680 if you have some. I used that under the 300 grainer of  Magnus Bullet Co. It was the first cast bullet I was able to drive above 1300 fps and get good results from. That load was good for 1425-1450 fps from my barrel. If that works, go ahead and load it over the 22.5 grains of H110. I'm not sure you couldn't load the 1680 even heavier. As DJ once said of the Maximum, "I just don't think there is enough volume or the powder compressable enough to get into trouble" The 44 Mag has a ridiculous expansion ratio. I think you'd have to get into something the speed of Blue Dot to get in trouble with a 44 Handi. And if you blow it up, just send it back and tell 'em JP said it could be done

Generally, 1600 is the speed quoted as the top velocity for a plain base bullet. Of course, your mileage may vary, but I think you'll be satisifed with those bullets and there should be a good load or two you can find to drive 'em with.
