Recognizing that hold, trigger control, and follow-through are more important, how much benefit to the hold is obtained from a shooting vest? Several members of the Benton Gun Club, where I shoot, purchased Winstead vests last year and reported that their "wobble" improved by half. Is this typical? If so, are the same results to be expected from the lighter weight vests? Daly

The lighter shotgun vests won't stay in the same position all the time. They slide around and don't give you a good anchor like the heavier Winstead vest.. The heavy vest are a great source of support not only for the butt, but also for your elbow. Do not make the mistake of getting a dark color.

Daly, if their wobble improved by half where their scores twice as good?

I heard Chris Winstead said to some shooters that his vest would improve their scores by two points.

Heavy leather or canvas vests are not supposed to provide artificial support, they are supposed to be worn loose by making sure that a thin 4 inch PVC pipe no less than 30 inches in lenght, passes through the entire length of the vest.

It is my opinion that the heavy vest rule is one of the least enforced rules at most matches and it is also my opinion that it is not necessary to wear one to become a top shooter like Tim Kurreck, Jim Feren and the many others who have never worn them.

OK let me rephrase part of what I said . When I used the word support. It may have been a poor choice of words. The shoulder area of the vest leather allows the butt stock to better stick in place than with a lighter vest. The side of the vest because of it being leather allows the shooter to get some friction against it to hold your elbow or underside of your arm against. I wear my vest more than loose enough,and I too think that the rule is under enforced. personally I don't know how people can breath when they wear the vest so tight as to try to gain some support from it. Thanks for the feed-back. What prompted my post is at the last match I attended, there were approximately 55 shooters and I think I was the only one in a T-shirt.

Incidently, I did try on the vest of one of the people who had commented on a hold improvement. The vest easily went around me without adjustment so I feel it would easily pass the 4" PVC pipe test on him.

in my opinion a vest is not only a fashion accesorry, but also a helping tool to get all the stuff you need - with you - on the firing line-
to gain more points? - I dont know, maybe one or 2, maybe a 50% if you believe in it- after all it is all in your head........
One thing that is very helpfull is the leather (or non slipery material) recoil pad, it helps in 22s by preventing slips, and in HP it gives you an extra cusion + non slips. Because our rules say that there has to be 4" room, they take any stability advantage out of the vest.
I shoot with the vest, and I can not imagine to do it without it, but for me the biggest advantage is the recoil pad, and if I could put that recoil pad on my T-shirt then I think i would be shooting the same.
