NEWBE w/22-250
« on: December 02, 2004, 09:54:57 AM »
Just picked up a new 22-250 today, I mounted a b&l 6-24 power scope on her. What type of ammo (factory) should I try? I'm new to the handi's, I do have a 30-30 that sold me on these little devils.

TCR, welcome to the board.

first off, if you don't reload, pick up a box of Winchester White Box from Wal Mart.  They're in a white box of forty rounds for about $12.00/box.  Most that have tried them report excellant accuracy.  I've used them as well, and they worked great.

If you're into reloading, try50 or 55 grain V Max's, and/or Nosler Ballistic tips.  I am using 50 grain V Max's right now, but just picked up a hundred 40 grainers to try.  This is in a .223, not a 22-250, but it should be similar if the twist rates are the same.

Good luck with your new toy and keep us posted on how it's working out for you.

Ditto on the white box econo pack Winchester 45 grn JHP.  In the 22-250 loading they advertise 4,000 fps.  I have chronographed some out of my 22-250 bolt gun at a bit over 4,000.  One actually tripped the timer at 4,093 fps.  That is a hummer.  And pretty accurate too.  About 1" at 100yds.  However they may not be that fast out of a handi, what with the "micro groove rifling".  The white box stuff for the 223 advertises 3,600 fps on the box but out of my 223 UV with 24" barrel it runs about 3,450 avg.

Thanks for the info guys, I had great luck w/ three diff types of ammo. I tried the 45 gr. winchester, rem 55 gr spbt, and the federal 55 gr hpbt. To my suprise they all were 1" or less w/ cool barrel, and I was shocked to see they all had the same point of impact.

Does your .22-250 have any problems ejecting shells? I am thinking about buying one in stainless.

IT WILL NOT EJECT IT INTO THE AIR, IT ONLY PULLS IT OUT OF THE CHAMBER. SO FAR I LOVE IT, I CANT BELIEVE THE ACCURACY OF THESE GUNS W/ FACTORY AMMO.

That's cuz the .204 Ruger and .22-250 have extractors, not ejectors! Maybe all the new handis will have extractors!!!

No, its a "pull-it-outer"  :)  Yeah sorry about my terminology, I'm learnin' the words and the ways of the handy. Buy the way, off topic how hard is it to come by used barrels? I dont want the down time of sending my action in, and I'd love to try the 30-06.?
