caliber for young hunter
« on: November 30, 2004, 03:57:47 PM »
My niece is wanting to go hunting next year and I am thinking about buying a barrel so she can hunt with my encore she is 12 and not very big so recoil is an issue.  I don't mind buying one for the hunt because my two girls will be able to use it to if they choose to hunt. I was thinking about a 243 or 25/06.  I also was wandering about the 260 and 280 never heard allot about them. I will probably get the barrel about 22 inches long.

I have a limbsaver on my 308 and it went from being a handful to being pretty sedate.  308 may not be your favorite, but a recoil pad can help alot.

My 11 yr. old daugter likes my 6.5 x 55 encore.  I loaded up some 95 gr. Hornadys that have very little recoil.  Her bullets only hit a little lower than my 129 gr. loads that are considerably hotter. The recoil and ballistics are about the same as the 260 Rem.   I got the encore barrel because I have a couple of 6.5 Swedish mausers that are super accurate.

7mm08 and if you reload you can soft load it to 30-30 recoil levels.

How about a 300 Whisper?  You lose a little range but a 12 year old probably shouldn't be shooting at 200-300 yds anyway.

Try a 250-3000 Savage.  SWEET little barrel.  I have been testing it and it will knock a deer silly.  Factory ammo is accurate with mine, but I will reload mine down for my girls and it will almost be like shooting a 22.  Maybe not that light, but it will be non-noticable.  Mine is 21" and when put with a youth stock, it should be a great combination.

The .243 caliber is the best all around for children in my opinion.  It is so versatile.  She could shoot it and you could too.  It is a hard one to beat.  With our deer being smaller, my cousins have started their children with a 223.  I think it is risky.  They are shooting neck shots and I think a child and the small caliber is a mighty risky venture.

hands down the best kid ladies cartridge is a 243 for deer and other little critters. the recoil is nothing to speak of and they tend not to be afraid of the recoil in the 243 as well. it is my next barrel for deer for my wife and god daughter they seem to want and try to hunt so i figure i can get two birds and one barrel lol

I will buy either a 260 Remington or a 7mm-08 for each of my kids as they get old enough to hunt.  They can easily be loaded to the same recoil level as a 243 Winchester, but they are far more flexible.  With bullet weights going up to 160 grains for the 260, or 175 grains for the 7mm, loads can be found that will work for any non-dangerous game.  This allows the rifle to grow with the hunter.  In the same vein, the 6.5x55mm, or the 7mm Mauser would be good choices.

Of course, since this is the T/C forum, we're really talking about first barrels, I suppose.  One could always start with a 243 barrel for deer, then track down a more flexible cartridge later.

My girl started shooting a T/C in 7X30 Waters last year at the age of 10.  I backed off the load a little and she hasn't been bothered by recoil.
