Cleaning a Contender action??
« on: December 31, 2004, 02:20:19 AM »
I have been using one of my actions with a Muzzleloader barrel, and I would like to take it apart and clean it.   Can anyone refer me to a site that shows how to dismantle the action.  I have never done this, and I have visions of springs flying everywhere if I attempt it on my own.    If there is no site, can someone give me a few tips??
Thanks in advance!

You really don't need to disassemble it to get it clean, the action is very simple and  you can use crud cutter or carb cleaner to get it all.  Taking it apart isn't too hard but putting it back together requires three hands or a slave pin to act as your third hand.  Again, though, you can clean the action very well without complete disassembly.

Thanks for the replies.  I copied the drawing for future reference, and I used my old method using brake cleaner this morning.  I thought taking it apart may be a better option, but I believe I will stick with the brake cleaner.

all I ever use is break cleaner. I take the grip off the frame take it out side and let it srpary until it runs clean. Do not let the break clean get on plastic parts it will "eat them"

After you use the brake cleaner to clean the action, DO NOT slop oil into it!!  T/C recommends you shoot the action dry - few folks ever read the instructions.  Oil the pins from the outside, use a preservative oil on the outside, but keep the internal parts dry.  Done it for 30 years, no excess wear even on frames I shot IHMSA with (10,000 rounds a year for several years).  The only action parts I've had to replace were springs (just in case) and one fly due to battering on the end - not a lubrication issue.
