Recoil Inserts
« on: March 27, 2005, 09:43:23 AM »
Gentlemen,

I am interested in purchasing a .375 H&H Mag and am leaning toward the Winchester Model 70 Classic Stainless with a synthetic stock.  I remember reading a posting from Lawdog that suggested that you can significantly tame the recoil of a big bore rifle by installing a  mercury recoil insert.

Couple of questions:
1) Can these inserts be installed within a synthetic stock?
2) Is there one brand of mercury insert over another that you would        recommend?

Thanks in advance for any insights you can offer.

Dave,

The mercury inserts I use are the ones from C&H Research.  Go to their web site at http://www.mercuryrecoil.com/contact.htm to see all their models.  You can also call them at 1-888-324-5445 toll free.  Lawdog

Sure did!  When I was checking into mercury inserts I saw where some said the a lead bar or birdshot worked just as well.  Don't you believe it.  I tried both in my Ruger M77 Magnum .416 Rigby and there is a BIG difference between birdshot/lead bar and a mercury insert(all weighted 11 oz.).  The mercury inserts work.  Lawdog

You don't have to take my word for it.  Mercury inserts are the preferred choice for controlling recoil for many of the Professional Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clay shooters.  Just think of the number of rounds they go through in a day.  Lawdog

I'm Sure you will be able to tell the difference, I put the mercury inserts in my375H&H and 45-70 both Ruger #1s and it made a whale of a difference. I don't have anything on my Marlins but they don't seem to kick as hard as the #1s do. Take care..........Joe..........

oso45-70, I don't mind the recoil when hunting, but at the bench it is a killer. I like to shoot all my guns all the time, not just for hunting. I am hoping it will tame it a little.  :D

Redhawk1......please let me know how this works out for you.......I took my 1895 to the gunsmith back when I first bought it.......and asked him to install one of the mercury reducers......He flat told me I was wasting my money.......He's the kind of smith who pretty much picks and chooses what he wants to do.......must be nice.......

I've read a lot of posts that indicate they work great........I'm thinking about installing one myself...........Are you going to install it or are you going to take the gun to a smith?

I had the smith fit a limbsaver, and that made a huge difference......I'd like more recoil reduction myself if possible.......

victorcharlie, My Ruger #1 already has the proper hole in the stock. I just need to insert the mercury reducer in it with a small amount of tape to keep it secure, according to the maker.

If it works like they say it does, I will order some more for a few other of my big bores. I will drill the stocks myself, because they don't have large enough holes to accommodate the mercury reducers.  :D

victorcharlie,

If you have a good drill press or access to one then drilling the proper hole at the proper angle is no problem.  Just follow the instructions that come with the inserts.  Your shoulder and disposition will thank you.   :toast:   Lawdog

Lawdog, my buddy and I drilled my Encore stock today. We used a wood spade bit. Very simple, we just followed the directions it the package. I installed the mercury reducer, and it fit like a glove. When I get my Sims pad I will install it and then the barrel. I will have to reload some rounds up and then head to the range. Also I will be putting a Leupold VXII 1X4X20mm on it with Warne mounts and rings.    If all works out, and the mercury reducer works, I will order another on for my Ruger #1.  :D

The Sims recoil pad made a big difference on my gun.......I would be interested to know if you would fire the gun with just the mercury insert.........then add the sims......and let us know what you think!

I can do that, I will just take the stock pad and the sims pad, when I get it all in and ammo loaded up for it.  :D

I have never tried the Sims recoil pads as I have always used Decelerator pads on all my rifles(if they don't come with Decelerator pads they get one BEFORE they ever get shot) but I did try shooting my .416 Rigby with/without the insert and what a difference the insert made.  Lawdog

Well I shot the Encore 416 Rigby today with and with out the sims pad. I noticed the sims pad had less felt recoil than the stock pad. The mercury insert and the sims pad made the 416 Rigby recoil not bad at all. I have more felt recoil from my 300 win mag Encore barrel.

Now I have a mercury insert coming for my Ruger #1 and I will order a sims recoil pad also. I like how soft the sims pads are. I will also order another mercury insert for my Sako 375H&H and a sims pad for it. What a set up.  :D

Thanks Lawdog for the information, I put it to good use.  :D

OK, so I've decided to order the 16oz mercury recoil reducer.   Here's a thought that I need some input on.... What if I drill the hole in the stock (slightly oversize), drop in the recoil reducer, & then pour molten lead around it to both secure it in place & to add more weight.   I guess my question is will the molten lead burn up the wood before the lead solidifies?

Maybe a crazy idea, but maybe it'll work.

In my Ruger #1 I added lead shot in first, to take up room so the mercury insert would not move back and fourth. Then I installed the mercury insert so it was flush with the stock and reinstalled the butt pad. It added a little weight and holds the mercury insert in place securely. I don't think I would put molten lead in it though. You may damage the stock or even the mercury insert. JMHO  :D  Try the lead shot first.

Best place I've found for the above mentioned mercury recoil reducers:
http://www.1st-shooting-supplies.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=1SS&Category_Code=mrs

These, and the Simm's recoil pad made a WONDERFUL difference in my
Encore with any of the four barrels (made the Tac 20 barrel kick like a
Daisy Red Rider  :) ) and tamed the Savage ML even with very heavy
loads. Range practicing is very nice, with no bruised shoulders, now.  :D

Instead of following through with my last post (using molten lead to hold the recoil buffer in place), which was a silly idea anyway, I ended up just pouring epoxy around it.

Anyway, moving along.... Went to the range today to try this thing out.  My Marlin GG is a blast to shoot, but it became "not-fun" after a short while at the bench.  Call me a recoil wimp... I'm OK with that.  Well, I don't know if it was just the added weight (got the 16 oz version) or if the mercury was a benefit, but it definitely helps with the recoil.  A VERY noticable difference.  I highly recommend them.

I've been thinking about getting the C & H for my 1985GS also and have been thinking about getting the 16 oz, but was wondering how it would affect the balance of the light rifle.  Is it that noticable?  Has anyone shot same or similar rifles with both 11 and 16 oz weights?

1895GG,

The first rifle I installed a C&H insert in was a Ruger M77 Magnum .416 Rigby, which are barrel heavy anyway.  An 11 oz. insert works great and balances the rifle out nicely.  Lawdog
