Ultra Varmint Thumbhole in what caliber?
« on: March 06, 2013, 12:38:48 PM »
i like this rifle a bunch and since i already have the buff classic i don't want another 45-70.  i had a rem .22-250 long ago and don't want one again so i'd need to choose 'tween .223 and .243 for varmints and just plain fun shooting out to 300 yards.  i read somewhere about "issues" concerning the h&r .243 accuracy ... ?

If this is the 24 inch bull barrel thumbhole your talking about, I have it in .243. It is a absolute tack driver with the ammo that i've fed it so far, nothing above 90grs but for fun and long range coyote you don't need anything heavier than that. I've shot factory loads with the 80gr GMX, 80gr TTSX, 80gr Soft points, 90gr E-Tip and about to try the 85gr Speer soft point boat tail and the 85gr Federal Trophy Copper load. The first four listed shot very very well, so much so I in fact was surprised, I put a heavier flat on the bottom synthetic forend on it along with a Limbsaver Barrel De-Resonator ( they go on all of my rifles even sub-moa guaranteed ones ). Not sure if you have seen this or not, I didn't know it until I got the gun that they have a recessed target crown as well. All in all I really like the gun quite well and am very pleased with it's accuracy.

I have two UT .243's, two UT .223's... you can't go wrong with either... accuracy has been excellent. I shoot 55 VM's in the .223 and 58 VM's in the .243 for yotes and 80 GMX and 90 BT's for deer. The .223 is going to be cheaper to shoot... but the .243 gives you the option to hunt deer... so it's up to you from there.

yep, this one ...

... i almost never use factory ammo, always build my own rounds.  just need to weigh the differences 'tween the two calibers.  ammo expense is not a real consideration.  i would like to mess around with low velocity cast bullets, as well.

so, sounds like no issues with the h&r .243 in terms of consistent accuracy ... ?

There have been reports of accuracy issues online... but I think there is a lot of "parroting" of online reports... I have never had any issues with accuracy... relative to any other caliber. And the 58 VM's are very consistently accurate out to 400 yards... which I never expected from them.

What's a "58 VM"?
any trigger issues with the UVT?
The frame is the same as all SB2's and so is the trigger... so there are the usual issues (a little crunchy and heavy, but fixable)... "58 VM's" are the Hornady 58 grain V-Max bullet... very nice with H4350 and CFE-223.

I'm enjoying the heck out of my 243 thumbhole. Ive worked up 1 bullet/powder combo so far and had good luck. The trigger is a probably on the heavy side, but no real issues with creep or grittyness. I bought in January, so its fairly recent production as well.

Good luck with your decision!
