Thinking of buying one...458 Win. or Lott
« on: November 04, 2004, 03:22:45 PM »
Hey all...
I'm thinking of purchasing a new big bore..I just recently bought a 45-70 handirifle and love these big bore guns and am thinking of upping the ante a little...Been reading alot on these two chamberings and feel I can handle the recoil of these magnums...Can't be any worse than My 3.5'' Ultimag I don't guess or a hot loaded 45-70 in a seven pound rifle...What kind of prices should I expect for a Ruger#1 or bolt action type guns...Funds are limited to 1,000 dollars or less. I'll have to get a scope later on plus make sure I won't get a case of the scope eye..Any info on these two rounds would greatly be appreciated...
                                                        Thanks,
                                                          NATMAN

To each his own I say.

I have almost 200 full house 500 grainers through my CZ Lott and haven't had any problems. Maybe it's because I ignored plenty of well intentioned advice. Maybe because I paid $685.00 and got a beautiful stock with sharp checkering. Of course there's also the self-abuse I like to subject myself to. Jerry

The only reason to buy one of the boomers in a No1 is to really get the snot kicked out of yourself. I like the gun and allways have, but wouldn't own one over .300 mag. Before you call me a sissy look at my username. As far as serious hunting guns go Ruger No1's are the worst kickers on the planet caliber for caliber.

Want some fun 375HH?   Try the #1 in .416 Rigby off the bench I have and it ain't fun.    Ruger should learn about recoil pads since they do not know what they are, the thing on the butt of their rifles is a rubber butt plate it sure is not a recoil pad.
As to the question as to .458 Lott or .458 Winchester, I would go with a CZ550 Magnum in the Lott but get it glass bedded.    With the Lott you will have all the energy you will ever need and in a pinch you could shoot .458 Winchester ammo in it if that was all you could find.    However if it were for me I would take the same rifle in the .416 Rigby.
There is no such thing as over kill!!!!  :-)

Buy a cz for sure, cz's and Brno 602's are some of the most used rifles in Africa. I bought a cz .458 winnie and had it turned into a lott. I love it a lot and it performs flawlessly with woodleigh 500 gr softs at around 2300 fps.

Ensure you get some cross bolts added and have it bedded.

I now own 5 cz's and they are accurate and dependable rifles.

Natman , I have both, and in bolt, and Ruger No1s, and with the  lott you don't have to make the choice, you can simply shoot both in the same rifle!

I have a Lott in an FN mauser, and I have an unfired No1H 458Win Mag, that is being turned into a lott, as we speak. Even the little punk 45-70 in a Ruger No1, needs a real Packmayr decelorator, and they now come in the classic red color.   There is nothing wrong with a CZ 458 LOTT, and the CZ is a true Magnum CRF action, not a opened up push feed.  Just get one and do your home work.   Before you depend on any rifle to save your life, it needs tuneing, no matter who makes it,  and it simply MUST be CRF!    8)

Natman, If you want capacity, the CZ Lott has it. The most I ever put in it was 3, CHRISTmas eve I found that I could get 5 in the mag and 1 in the chamber. Firing at about a round per 5-7seconds, I had no feeding issues. Except perhaps the 36 rounds that were gone in less than a half hour.

Natman, You may want to look at some of the lower pressure rounds like the old 450's, or even a 458 Express. There's a good thread on this topic over at AR forums. Let us know what you get and how you like it. Jerry
