Hunting With Handguns
« on: June 12, 2003, 08:11:47 PM »
Hello,
I recently finished reading'Hunting With Handguns'by George Nonte.
I like the book. I think that it is very good reading for someone(like me),who is thinking about hunting Whitetails with a handgun.
I was a little surprised that he considers the 357 Magnum as more then adequate for them. Most people, who I seem to meet, consider it as too weak.

I also liked the book, even though it sounded like an ad for Super Vel and Automags. The .357 is OK depending on
  1 Your skill level
  2 Your deer
  3 Your self control
When the book was written, people believed rifle cartridges like the 30/30, .270, or .308 were enough for deer, not like now when we know you need a MAGNUM for a 120# whitetail. That said, I like 44s and 45s in handguns. But i also like .35s and .45s in rifles. Still a good read. Take it you like Krags?

That right by gawd, you need a MAGNUM rifle to take them big mean and nasty whitetales!!  Never mind that THOUSANDS of them have been taken with the 257 Roberts, them guys just got LUCKY!!

Nonte was a bit of a crackpot when it came to advising guns and loads for particular purposes. If you want an authoritative book that matches objective reality, then read Hunting For Handgunners by Jones and Kelly or Successul Handgun Hunting by Johnston. The Nonte book serves only as a book to round out the library who owns a copy of all books written on handgun hunting.  Be very careful about which of Nonte's ideas you let into your head.
