I know that some people think that if you don't spend at least 300.00 on a scope, then you have a sub-standard scope.
I will be getting the H&R sportster 17 hmr cal for a small varmint rifle. BSA sent me a catalog and I am considering the Mil-Dot 6-24x40 Illum. Reticle scope which runs about 100.00   .  Since the 17 does not kick, I am not worried about the scope getting it's optics shaken loose. It seems to be a lot of scope for the money.  Any problems with my prospective set-up. thanks for any feedback.

Rogmatt, while looking at the BSA's did you notice the Sweet 17? A scope designed just for the 17HMR. Sounds like a nice unit for the HMR. If I were to get into the HMR game I would seriously consider this scope. I read a favorable review at gunblast.com and they are priced where I could afford one.

Yes Nixter, I know about them, but the magnification only goes as high as 12x. I wanted one 18 or higher.

Rogmatt, SWFA has a Sweet 17 listed as 6-18x40, item#17618x40AO, listed price is 109.95 and includes a free bore sighter kit. I think there are currently 3 sizes of Sweet 17's to choose from.

I realize it tops out at 18x but it,s still a helluva deal.

BTW SWFA has a banner ad here at GBO. www.riflescopes.com

AS far as durability, i've got a 2-7x32 BSA "air gun" scope that i have used on my .17 NEF. I also used it on my CZ.

So far, it's been really excellent and I'm impressed with the finish--for $50 it even has metal screw in lens covers! The clickstops, so far, track perfectly. I have used it for silhouette and it cranks up and down for distance without a hitch--so far.

I keep saying 'so far' because I haven't dragged it behind a truck or anything yet. And I've heard other folks shriek about BSA. Maybe I;m lucky, but I'd buy another one.

I would question how consistant these scopes could be when changing power. Probably not a big deal on a big game gun, but huge on rimfiire for either small game or target shooting.

Check out the Redfield Tracker. They have a 4-16AO which is not much more and is a very good scope. Just got one for my Sportster 17HM2.

I have an 8x32 BSA Platinum on a 22/250 Thompson Center Encore and have never regreted or even questioned it. A hunting buddy bought a Burris posi-loc of the same magnification and couldn't believe his eyes when we hunted ground hogs together. It is one of the most accurate inexpensive scopes I've ever used and I love it.

I need another parallax adjustable scope, so I think I'll get another BSA.

I might get the challenger or platinum model because they have multicoated optics.

BTW, i saw a very nice 4-12 AO scope  with a crisp image called "Hunter" it was multicoated and sold for about $124.

Ever heard of the brand?

(I couldn't get much info out of the clerk, who informed me that only variable power scopes have parallax issues and tried to sell me a 6x fixed for my .22.

i know the optics look clear, but i would be concerned abot consistency on the variables concerning poi change.

the redfield is only a few bucks more and is proven to be durable and consistent.

Sounds good, but Is Redfield still the same Redfield. Or is it's "brand" being slapped on stuff coming out of the same Chinese factories as Simmons, Tasco and BSA?

I have the 6-18 sweet 17 on my Marlin 917 vs.For what I paid for it ($109.00) from SWFA,It works for me.Surely not the quality of a Leupold, but for shooting woodchucks and crows and such,it works just fine.It also seems to "return to zero" well when running the elevation from say 200 yards back to 100 yards.Just my .02.
